Cheap but good headphones...

these ones have such a beefy but flat sound (5hz-28khz) and wrap around your ears perfectly....my mixing is going to improve a lot....

i have ATH M30s. i read up a lot on phones and then took a list and some Alias stuff on the ipod to a store and tried all their phones with tracks i knew really well.

i got the M30s because when i used them i suddenly heard all this stuff buried in one of the Alias songs that i'd NEVER heard before (really sub-audible talking). i mean, i knew these tracks, so it was pretty mind blowing to suddenly have this new stuff emerging. i thot it was a good reason to get the phones.

i have the audio technicas ath-m50s. they are very comfortable. part of the reason i like them so much.

yea man i feel like wearing them even when im not listening to anything!

definitely hearing errors in mixing and little nuances that i could never hear even on my monitors


i listened to a live session of a jazz band, and i actually thought my headphones were unplugged....
then i realized thats HOW good these things are

don't pay attention to frequency range, it's pretty meaningless. look at all the specs together.
audio technica ATH-M40fs is what i'm rocking right now. a little bit over $50 but worth it. if you want cheaper you can go for the M30's or M20's. but audio technica's studio phones are generally good quality for decent prices.

if you go AKG you're not gonna get anything great for $50 unless you get those K81 DJ or K24 P (the 24 P's are the illest walkman headphones ever!)

i got the same audio technica as you guys.
i think they dont colour the sound, they are "close" to the original sound
in other word, if you are searchin for headphones wich dont make you feell "boombastc" bass, "heavy metal" drums etc and things like this, they are the right headphones.
i think they're good for studio and mixing/monitoring (you can use them in order to add a new "system" in monitoring sounds:you can "couple" them with monitors to do things better).
and for this they're really cheap.

I got some sony mdr-7506 headphones, for 100 bucks I think they are very nice.
If you can find the mdr-v6 headphones they're the exact same thing but cheaper. I got the more expensive joints 'cause that's what Leo's Pro Audio had and I try to support local businesses that know their stuff. Guitar Center can have some tardy ass people in pro audio.

Personally, i'd suggest that it would probably be a better idea to save another 25 dollars and get a pair of sennheiser hd280's ($75-100). these are some seriously effective headphones, they're clear, they dont distort the sound you're listening to, and they come with a pretty nice warranty and customer service. I've had my sennheiser's for over 8 years now...a damn good investment for any producer on a budget

MDR-7506's here too. For the money, they are solid headphones. Whatever you pick, you just gotta stick with it. Been using 7506's so long now, if I were to switch it would probably screw everything up.. cos I'm so used to the sound.

understatement of the year? i think so! I don't think I've ever had a purchase/transaction at any guitar center that went off with out some sort of fuck up on their part...

yo-yo has a point there, I mean look at the freq range figure of better headhpones... like 5-30000Hz who the hell do they think they can fool? 5Hz from a speaker of two or maybe three inches diameter? No way, you can be lucky to get down to 30Hz maybe. Which is just what my headphones do (Sony MDR-CD2000), although rated 5-30000Hz.

I rather suggest you visit a shop, take a good portable player with your, music you know very well on it, and try different models. Only this way you get a realistic impression, and after all wear comfort is crucial too.
