When the 303 and 505 first came out, they were meant to interact with each other. In fact you could exchange data by switching the Smartmedia from the 505 to the 303 and vice versa. I use to chop my samples in the 505 then transfer it to the 303. Thats why I think the 303 only has MIDI in, it was the 505's love-slave.
