Quantize only certain samples in a pattern

Post by mta7388 »

Hey all, new face here, glad to join the forums :) I tried searching but didn't really find what I was looking for.

I was wondering if it's possible to have only certain samples be quantize when recording in a pattern. For example, let's say I'm recording samples in a pattern with the quanitze option set on to 8, or whatever quanitze value. And then in the middle of my recording I change the quantize to off, and then record my drum pattern from other pads.

Will the pattern keep only the keyboard samples quantized and not quantize the drums? Or will everything in the pattern be not quantized?

Using an sp303 that i just got, which is dope.

from what i understand you have to sample yourself outside the sequencer just sampling yourself playing to a pad... then trigger this pad in the sequencer then play your drums.. i dont think you can record live into the sequencer from external gear..

sorry if i didn't clarify, i'm just recording the pattern with samples on the pads, no external gear. i'll edit the original post to clarify what i'm asking.

looking to only quantize certain samples in a pattern and leaving other samples unquantized in the same pattern if possible.

I'm not exactly sure what is the question... still:

Why not simply record the pads your want unquantised with quantise turned off, and those you want quantised, with quantise turned on?

yes, you can do exactly what you are talking about, quantize can be changed over and over again while recording, and when going back in an editting any existing pattern, now smash away on those pads!!

Yeah, quantize only applies when you specify it. So you can totally play stuff non-quantized when it comes to FX or other things you want to be 'live'.

Still though, if you're not doing a crazy fast roll, using quantize can still make for a on-beat timing as far as the sample's start point goes.

Not sure what you're trying to achieve, but quantize is set for each recording session and can be changed while recording. The quantize itself is 'input quantize' meaning, once you've recorded quantized pad play, you will have to play it again if you want to change the quantize. (aka it's destructive quantize)

The downside of this is you HAVE to set quantise every single time you hit record. It doesn't remember the settings at all - I found that very very very very very *gasp* very annoying indeed.

No chance it's going to become less of a hassle all of a sudden. I mostly use 16th swing quantise so I always have to adjust two knobs and on top remember what exact swing amount I used. Trust me, it sucks.

But then, I don't use the sequencer on the SX that much anyways, using an external one is just so much better :)

If you already know you're going to use the same quantize, why not do multiple things in one go?

The pattern will be looping anyway, so unless you're using very long patterns, you will just be able to continue.

I think it's better to need to adjust the quantize each time, as that will force you to plan things a bit better. Setting it right won't really cost time, it's just a one knob twist. ;)

Excuse me, but that's outright nonsense. Every single sequencer I ever used in hardware or software, and that's quite some, remembers the quantise setting once set, for good reason. Because it's like that, I've often enough just hit record and played stuff, only to realise that I fucked it up and the result is utterly unusable. It's not a personal preference, but kind of an INDUSTRY STANDARD that I got used to.

And it's not done with a knob twist either. Press a button, do a knob twist, do another knob twist for shuffle, and press a button again. Ever so slightly more than "just one knob twist" ;)

i hate when you need to erase something at the very beginning of your sequence, but you can't hit delete soon enough and have to wait for the whole loop to go round.

no quantize, no sequencer

resample!
