Mpc1k + SP505...possibilities?

Just wanted to know whats possible when combining these beasts...

I want to still keep the warm sound of the 505 but on mpc...
I want to trigger/chop samples stored on my 505 on the mpc...
I also want to use some of the505 efx on the mpc...

What else could i do?
And to midi sync i would just need the cable and change "drum" to midi right?

There are 2 ways you can freak it with MIDI.

1. Midi sync would be if you pressed play on the MP, and play was activated on the SP- essentially playing 2 seqs side by side. MP= master, SP=slave.

2. What you want to do is- yes make the drum track midi- then see what the pads trigger with the default layout. Sometimes it'll be weird cuz the pads aren't chromatic- it could be like: pad C 13 happens to trigger pad one on the SP, or whatever- not sure if you can switch midi note # assignments on the 1K, but see what random will get ya. Start with a blank slate on the MP, make a Midi track then bang every pad & see what gets triggered on the SP- then you can make note of that when making dual beats.

hXc is right on the money, and to make it even better you CAN change the midi note number that the 1K pads transmit. If you go into program mode there's a note screen where you can adjust the midi note number of each pad... In the 505 manual it will say what midi note number is assigned to each pad... You then need to adjust the 1K midi note numbers on the pads you want to use to trigger the 505 and make sure they match up... If you're trying to access more banks on the 505 you'll have to get into program changes and what not...

Word- then I imagine once you have the desired notes assigned you can save that as a parameter file on the MP.

Actually now that I look at the manual, I just realized there are two places to change the midi note number assigned to the pads... The way I described above would be just to change it for one specific program, but if you want to change the deaults so it applies to every new program you create you go the Midi/Sync mode and then go to the note page from there and make your changes, that will then be saved in the 1K as the default and all new programs will have those midi note number assigments... I'm pretty sure it then just saves it in the internal battery... I know on the MPC60 you can save a parameter file like you said, but I think the 1K retains that info... I can't remember there being an option to save a parameter file...

Ok so im back ....

So i hooked up a midi cable from midi out A to midi in on the sp505...
I changed drum track to midi... And 1a on
No sound

i played around with the notes/#s in the mid/sync window and in the program window...
No sounds

do i have to change something on the sp505...i tryed playin with the Pads Ch and no luck...

Are you trying to trigger samples in your 505 by using the pads on the 1000? You're basically trying to use your 1000 as the sequencer, and have it trigger your 505, right?? If that is the case you have the MIDI cable connected right. Do you have both the 505 and the 1K running into a mixer? If you're trying to use sounds from both machines you the outputs on both of them connected to a mixer, or something like that. If you're triggering the 505 from the 1K you need to at least have your headphones plugged into the 505... (sorry if that's obvious..)

I haven't used a 1K in a while, but I have sequenced a 505/404/202 from it so I know it's possible. Rather than try and guess my way through it, I'll go back through and get a step by step workflow and post back up in a day or two if needed... I need to get in front of the machines, but I know it works as I've done it before.

I certainly don't claim to be an expert on MIDI, but I'm slowly realizing its advantages, and trying to put it to good use... Here's some real basic stuff that you might already know, but that may be helpful for someone else: The key to remember is MIDI is basically one machine telling another machine what to do. It could be "play this pad at this exact moment" or it could be "turn down the volume by this much.." etc. A MIDI cable only transmits data, not an audio signal, so you still need to connect your outputs properly for each machine in the chain.. Each MIDI cable has 16 channels. Each channel has 127 MIDI notes. In order for MIDI to work the MIDI channel has to match on both machines, and the note has to correspond correctly with whatever function you're trying to use. If you look in the manual for the SP 505, the back of it will have a MIDI implementation section, and it will tell you what MIDI note is assigned to what PAD. Let's say you want to use pad1 on the MPC1K to trigger pad 4 on the 505.. You would make sure both machines are on the same channel, then you would find out what MIDI note number pad 4 on the 505 is set to, and then go into the note screen on the 1K and make pad1 match that... Whereas the 505 has many many banks, that's where program changes come in so you can access all the pads...

I used to think MIDI was this mad confusing thing, and is to a certain extent, but at the same time just keep messing with stuff and it will all start to become more clear...

I have both these machines so I don't mind going through doing a quick little step by step thing... Unless someone else gets to it before me.. Once you get it down, you'll be able to do a lot of stuff and you'll see the different ways you can put MIDI to use. It's dope.
