The SX can take SD or SDHC from what I remember.

I tried all types of SD cards in the SX and all work and have a 16gb in there right now. Since I have so much space, I backup a lot of one hits to load when using the utility software. It feels good to not worry about conserving. Only truncated once, just to try it. I had an SP-202 with a 4mb SM card and I worried to much:(

dont think you'll have an issue with 1GB memory limit..

1 minute of stereo 44.1khz/16 bit wav takes up approximately 10MB..
so you can store 100 minutes of stereo wav data on a 1GB card..

add into that the fact that not all of your tracks will be stereo..

guess it depends just how much you need to have on there, and if you need any of the new features of the SX.

Seems like the "new" features are just the storage capacity, availability of the cards, and the fact that the pads have copy buttons, etc. It seems like I'd be fine with the old school 404 if I just had a couple 1gb CF's.

Don't forget about the shuffle quantisation! Depending on what kind of music you do, it's essential. And really, if it didn't have the pattern/sample copy, I wouldn't even have bought it.

You need to convert everything to 16bit 44.1kHz, mono or stereo standard WAVE (sometimes called Microsoft Wave). Don't worry about the bits on mp3s, the format doesn't allow anything other than 16bit.

And another thing I'm questioning is the 404's ability to transfer data, such as finalized products, to the PC. Please explain this process to a nube

The SP-404(SX) can't export pattern/songs/tracks, if that's what you mean. You'll have to go the old-fashioned way of recording it using a soundcard.

While I haven't used the SX, if you have the opportunity to return the 404, I would for sure get the SX. Even if you have to pay 100 dollars more, the SX comes with a 1gb card so that will take care of your memory issue. And pattern and sample copy will make your workflow a lot faster. Also the speed of the sampler (loading, saving, resampling) is supposed to be a lot quicker. I can't comment on the shuffle or anything since I haven't actually used it, but overall the SX seems like a great upgrade if you don't already own the 404 (or if you can return it).

2nd last post of page 1

I recorded a little recording session demonstrating the shuffle quantise. First half is me recording, 2nd half is me playing the recorded pattern and tweaking the reverb effect a bit.

The copy pattern/ sample stuff is a very valid reason to consider the newer 404SX, but don't forget the flying lotus technique works very well. I don't miss having a copy function, as it's basically there. Shuffle quantize though, is a whole different matter.

first, venusinfurs, welcome to the forums and nice work on the velvets reference in yr name (if that's where yr going there).

i can't comment on the sx, but i can say that i have a 404 and have never had a space limitation. you can google for places that sell compact flash cards (as you say, they're about $40 now), and when i find a place, i buy a few at a time, and i advise others to do the same.

you can also look through the SPI section of the forum for names of CF cards known to work (or not) with the 404, so you can make relatively informed purchases and not end up with duds.

however, i am sure that the 404sx offers some cool upgrades and maybe it is the best option for you. i just wanted to post so you would know that the space fing isn't an issue with a 1 gig card.

good luck mans.
