I had thought about that too, but using a delay to get a second snare on time is kind of cheating anyways. So if would defeat the purpose of not using quantize to some extent.

However, I'm not going to force you to do manual echoes or place restrictions on FX. Although.. we definitely could to rule out any work-arounds. :)

I don't know. It's probably best to not make heavy use of delay or echo FX that sync to a BPM. Then again, it's not impossible to be on time using the metronome and perhaps a lot of trial and error. So it's not like a perfectly on-beat beat is impossible to achieve even without work-arounds.

But I'm very curious to see if the beats that come out of this will sound more 'live' and 'natural'. I think they will.

Announcement:

This battle will start today, you can make use of samples in this thread or use your own.

There's really only one rule:

-Do not use any kind of Quantization. (work-arounds included, but there's no restriction on the usage of FX).

The battle will end at the 1st of March, assuming there are at least 6 participants .

Either way we can extend the deadline if needed (read: asked for).

Whoah, I jumped the gun a bit here. Was pretty amped to have a go at this, so I made two tracks in the spirit of this comp.

The one I was intending to contribute (because it samples from j.griz's African LP) and uses no quantize or sequencing, but I did use a metronome, the rhythm slicer effect (not the BPM one) & a delay pedal on my bass. If anyone thinks its a cop out then I'll remove or redo the bass. It was played entirely live, no edits, does that count?

Second one was using different samples, banged out in one go on the MPC500. 1st attempt at no quantize, no metronome or anything so it is sloppy. Massive respect to folk like Jel & Aarabmusic.

Hey man, you did a good job at this. I like what you made there. :)

I assume you're going to enter with the first one, or? edit: I wouldn't say dodgy, but definitely less smooth. :)

Yeah, I do think this challenge needs a second chance and new deadline indeed.

We can extend the deadline to April the 1st (no joke) and close it then.

I hope some more people will join in this! (though I have a feeling no one will, it will be closed April 1st no matter what)

"The Mad Masanka Player"
Samples from the record (African Musical Instruments). And for the record I added a glitchy sound, a simple bass sound and I sampled my self playing a wood flute (looks African)... At least I had a little fun...

My apologies for being a slacker in this one, but I'm mad busy at the moment.

The deadline has passed though, so I'll post a poll soon.

Wow, I totally forgot about this one, thought it was dead & buried... Good on you zomB, Oaxaca & Gis Sweden for having a crack!

Oi Phemox, this had me thinking about the competition rules. Should there only be a limited number run at a time? Ie- one standard SP challenge & one open challenge? Otherwise there's too much going on & some great challenges (this one) get slept on.

It's either that or I'll eat a bag of cement & harden the fuck up.
