whats a good computer program to use to make tracks?

i usually get ideas on my 303 and try to record them but it doesnt work for me on audacity for some reason.

i read on the flying lotus interview he uses mainly programs to make his beats?

any ideas?

Ableton live is pretty key. Reason is good, but I'm pretty sick of it after using it for a while. Pro Tools is the shit for recording. Yup those are my favorites. Native instruments and Waves have pretty much the best plug ins in my opinion.

I'd go with REAPER if I was just starting out. I think it's the program you're going to see take over in several years. It's just so damn versatile and cheap. Throw Audacity in there and you're set.

Personally, I still use old versions of Acid for tracking and Soundforge for WAV editing, but I'm pretty old school. I'll probably transition to REAPER to record my band's next album, though.

I think Acid is good- I have used since ver2 now they are on 7, odd time sig, tempo changes, midi sync to/from hardware, the CHOPPER is sick- create a track with beats or music, create emty track below- then select first track and open the chopper- drag random or quantized bits to the blank track- arrange and such- sick

I'm 99 percent sure Fly Lo uses Ablenton live. It has some pretty coo sounds and you can do a lot of things with it. Reason is cool too and real easy to use. Protools is cool for mixing but its really expessive.
problems are you having with audacity ?

I like Mixcraft. easy to uses and versatile. I dont think Flying Lotus uses it but thats ok, there's already half a million beat makers that sound just like him.

Co-sign on reaper. very good multitracker and it does vst's, etc. Perversely cheap too at $60 a full discounted license for private use

Woah! 2.0?! That is *old* school. When did that come out? I used Acid 3.0 for years, but I've managed to get 6.0 now. I don't even use half the features, so I don't have any reason to upgrade, really. I just use it as a glorified multitracker. I do most of my sound creation out of the box or in an Audio editing program, and then record it piece by piece into Acid.

But like I said, I think I'd like to make the transition over to Reaper. Since it's open source, I have a feeling it's going to become the de facto standard for people who really know what's up. You'll see cats in studios showing off the new protools rig, but at night, behind closed doors they'll be using Reaper. =^)
