Hi-

Is anyone here using their 404 for live music stuff? if so, how are you using it?

I've only done one live gig with the 404 so far, but basically I've did a LOT of stuff before the 404 came into play.

That is to say what I did was use the 404 to playback songs / beats I had already made (with different gear, mostly remixes) and imported entire songs to single pads, with a bunch of filler samples for inbetween stuff.

Making some mad use of the FX you can actually use just the SP-404 for an entire live gig. It's pretty dope actually and with a mic hooked up you can do DJ style introductions and shout-outs no problem. 8)

I haven't done anything with the sequencer though, most of my songs / beats were semi-loops of remixes / popular music.

Yeah, I rock the 404 live all the time. I'm in a group that I make the beats for, and I always play my shit live off it. I rock it a few differnet ways, depends on the track... If I rap on a track I might just trigger the entire beat from the 404, and then do a few things with the effects for flavor.. If I'm not rapping on the track I might trigger different parts, and try to flip it live a bit, maybe leave the bass going and then play sample chops live over it... Sometimes I'll leave all the drums out of the track and then hook up a midi controller and lay down all the drum parts live over the beat... It really depends on the song...

My homie and I also run a weekly hip hop open mic night in our city and once every month or two we have a few cats rock live beats off samplers for the open mic, rather than just a DJ. Last week I just layed down lots of different loops and chopped up samples while my homie played drums from his MPC2500. Shit was dope.

The 404 live is dope because you can do so much so many different ways.

This is a vid of me practicing, just using it to trigger samples in this setting.

That's exactly what I meant with playing samples in between to chain beats together. Especially awesome if you use several pieces of gear like you do there, but using shorter stabs you can pull this off with just he 404 as well. I definitely like those beats there too btw.

I used to use it triggerd from another sequencer...

I plan on using it in the future mostly played by hand or via midi controller though.. will see what happens, I'm not too sure yet about the new setup.. havent settled yeet with a particular setup.

and drewz that Feb jam is sick!

plus one on the feb jam drewz. totally dig it.

live w/ the 404 is simple and awesome. IMO the easiest of the sp- series to use live.

you can trigger one shots over loops, one shots over sequences, sequences over loops or a series of one shots (good if you have something else happening from another band member or whatevs), plus the FX keep you tweaking knobs and looking busy.

Here's an overhead of my decks. CDJ is to the right, just barely pictured:

And now the right Turntable has been replaced with this beauty:

I'm a happy boy.
