Thanks for the feedback Phemox; this was a real challenge...it really made me start to dig deep on the sp-404.
E-simon, nice harmonic loops there. Interesting stuff.

Well one battle have to be your first... Recorded on my Creative ZEN mp3-player (adds some extra character to the track. No I do not have stereo line in on my sound card. I will get some proper recording gear any day. Some kind of "digital porta".). All sound from the two Horror Sound tapes.

Nope, the deadline is the 4th of February. Kel said 10 days from the 25th of January.

Ha! Gotta learn how to use calenders now. Suppose getting that wrong means being automatically barred from the comp then?
Here's 2 contributions anyway. Only the first matches the criteria. Can't say I liked what I came up with, but it was the best of several jams using these samples. The second is exactly the same but with extra bass guitar, melodica & xylophone. Its pretty sloppy, knocked out the recordings in no time with no care (just messed around with the piano's scale- B Ionian).

Damn dude, you're learning that thing quick! How'd you get that round bass sound out of the samples? I tried like a bastard to get something like that but couldn't with my SP-606. Good work!

here's what i did- pick any sound that matches the main frequency that you want your bassline to be...it might not need to be a harmonic tone, just as long as the fundamental frequency matches the one you're looking to mimic for the bassline. sample that in as loud as possible. filter that down to get only the bass samples--->resample--->compress+resample---->and then just keep using drive and filter until you have something usable.
a few tips with this method
make sure you try to find a sample without much below the frequency you're looking to sample. a weird but effective way to trim this off for me was to pitch effect(roughly) to raise the basstone up to a midrange level and then use isolate to roll off the low end, after i did this, i dropped the sample back down using the pitch and resample using the main sounds i had to get the pitch more-or-less right.
to get the tone to loop as long as you hold the button, use mark to set it course, use finetune start end to get it looping right. I suggest having a guitar tuner to help make sure that you don't alter the pitch in the looping process. from here, you probably want to truncate to get rid of the attack part of the sample and isolate as much of the sine-like-wave as possible. Then, for your pad, make sure the loop button is turned on.
filtering takes a lot of volume out of your sample- use drive-like effects to increase the volume again. it might distort, but remember that you can always filter that out. Using a lot of compression can also help get the level of the tone consistent so that it can be looped and repeated...but be advised it can take a load of trips through the compressor to get it right.
This process can take more than a few tries to get right (getting the basstone took about 1:30-1:45 with a lot of frustration), but all in all, i like the lowend that it gives you.
