True, but using the same CF card for both machines means it takes up less space too. ;)

ok this is an old thread but yesterday i found my old akai 32mb card in a drawer, and now life is GOOD 8)

Cannot believe i haven't been doing this all along. i've been able to cut my workflow right in half. i do all my sampling and sample tweaking/fx with my 404, and most of my sequencing on the mpc. but up until now i've been manually recording from the sp outs to mpc main ins, and naming all my samples in the mpc w the data wheel. basically sampling the same sound twice every time, then having to name them. takes forever.

the 32 mb card that came with my mpc will read exported files from the sp, which is totally amazing. i keep my sp archives named the og way (c_01...C_02) on the folder on my laptop desktop (via card reader), then skim through all the samples and pick out which ones i want to use. then drag them to the 32 mb and name them by typing it with the keyboard. wallah, all the sounds i want to use in one small place, already named. now i'm free to load and organize them however i want on the mp. and it really does sound much better than re-recording the sound. the lows sound full and the highs sparkle, whereas before the sounds were noticably boxy-sounding.

I never understood how cats could sleep on this.
IT'S FUCKING AMAZING, simple like that.
I don't even rename shit and stuff...

128MB Fujifilm cards don't work this way...

Every 64MB I tried was fine...

BUMP

This is an old thread, but worth bumping for sure...
I recently stumbled across a 64 MB Sansdisk CF card, and remembered this thread. I formatted it in my 404, exported some samples to, loaded it into my MPC1000 and it worked right away. The MPC recognized all the exported samples... Dope! Thanks Wax!

Did anyone ever figure out why this worked? I'm extremely curious and have been doing some research... I think I slowly starting to understand why this works... I am not really a technical guy, but I am very curious, and love weird stuff like this, so it's mostly just curiosity that led to me to research this...

I think it has to do with the FAT12 vs FAT16 vs. FAT32 file systems... I am pretty sure any CF greater than 2GBs uses FAT32, which is obviously newer than FAT12 and FAT16... I have found out that for CF cards formatted with FAT12 and FAT16 filesystems the root directory is in a fixed place and is always a certain size... For FAT32 the root directory is essentially no different than any other directory on the card, and can be a variable size.... I know when you export a sample on the 404 it saves it into the root directory of the card, so the MPC is reading the WAV from the root directory... This at least explains why the larger cards do not work... However I am not sure why the 64MB seems to be the cutoff... Maybe 64MB or less only uses FAT12? Anyone know??

Just to satisfy my own curiousity I'm going to keep looking into this, but I just wanted to post up in case anyone else had figured out anything else about this since this thread is kinda old....

I've been reading through these documents, but a lot of is over my head and I can only read a little bit at a time before I start to feel overwhelmed... haha.

I believe it's all about finding the start of the FAT and root directory when it comes to reading these cards though. Some cameras get confused whenever there are 'alien' folders on a card or are simply unable to switch safely between FAT12 and FAT16 (that's a internal reader thing).

I think the reason why this works is because the SP-404 formats the card to the FAT12 file structure (when the card is 64mb or smaller), in all other cases it probably formats to FAT16 or FAT32 (probably not FAT32 or else it would read bigger cards I think). When I'm not mistaken you can format a 1Gb CF card to FAT16.

I'm guessing the MPC can read FAT12 formatted cards without having to switch anything internally. So it probably won't have any reading issues, again this is about finding the start of a FAT and locating the root directory.. In a way the fact that this works makes perfect sense.

I bought myself 2kxl with floppies yesterday.

Spent some time on reading mpc-forums.com and bam! CF card reader's ready :D And it costed literally less than 5 bucks for everything.

today I talked with Wax about this, he said that it would be nice update in this thread so here it is.

plus the wav files exported to a cf from sp-404 are all recognized in 2kxl, which really makes them both a nice marriage.

peace!

so far Im LOVING 2kXL - unlike it was with 1k, which I didnt like instantly.

What im using is "compact-flash card" reader, so (un)fortunately only those cards are supported.
Now I just need to mount it on the floppy case ( like here http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php ... 5#p1083048 ) and Im good to go :D

^ he said he tried it with a 1GB CF card... I asked him like 5 times!!!
...but since the the ram is only 32MB, I'm not sure if this beats the compatibility between 404 and 1k... :P
