Velocity on 303

it doesn't seem like there's really enough pads for one bank to add different velocity hits of kicks, snares, and hit hats, AND percussion on the 303... i wonder how madlib and shit does that?

could be the midi controller, could be the later volume adjustements if multitracked.

i wonder though, cause lib definitely did use the 303 for alot of stuff at one point, and i wonder if he used the work arounds we all use, like if he would place air to get a kick just right (i've always got the idea that he doesn't quantize often though), or maybe he had some ill outside the box 303 ninja technique shit that we haven't even thought of yet

well it seems it's pretty obvious that he used ONLY the 303 for some of his work. just wondering how anybody can get such organic drums using different velocity sensitivity for the drum hits, with such a small amount of space with those 8 pads...

He might have set out drums on pads with different volumes on them, like the same drum resamples and the volume is turned down, it could be an effect of the massive compression depending what else is going on in the track.

well i know about the different volume, which is why i'm wondering how he can fit a whole drum kit/percussion with diff. velocity hits on 8 pads of the 303...magic i suppose.

My theory is, that MadLib rocked the drums on his MPC 2000, then sampled certain loops to a few pads on the SP 303. I don't know but thats how I do shit when I'm making beats. Sometimes I'll bust out the XR20 and make a few drum loops, then sample that ish in the SP 303 or SP 606.

well i have a MIDI controller (axiom 61), but i just need some damn MIDI cables and i can use the pads on there for the velocity. how do i go about setting up the MIDI controller to it (anybody got a link)?

nah you can use all 32 in any pattern, you just can't have more than whatever the polyphony is playing at once, so to have a couple different snares, kicks, and hi hats wouldn't be to hard to use because your only using one snare and kicks wouldn't overlap more than one at a time, it'd pretty much be the same thing as only having one of each drum as far as polyphony is concerned

The reason some producers have a different sound is because they don't use the same piece of equipment. Everyone Talks about how the MPC, SP1200, SP404, ASR10, and other stuff have a unique sound, that's because they do. Producers with a unique sound will mix and match equipment.
