What is your experience with the SP 606??

very underrated due to its voice count... mainly but i can be a beast if u mess with it right... jus like a 404 or 303 RESAMPLING IS KEY!... i love mines... 2fxs @ the same time... it's dope... and u can get em cheap right now...

sorry my experience is not positive.
this machine had bugs with me when i used patterns+2fx simultaneoulsy: it kinda stopped or almost...
plus
i felt the autochop less powerful than the sp505: you cannot edit the chops...but this is only a detail...

good things about the 606:
-usb (>so you can record your performance directly to your pc; >you can use the 606 as a controller for pc)
-master function button: you can adjust the sound of your performance, this is useful when you got the pitch (the sp pitch i mean)
-synths: you can play them, they're a lot...
-dbeam: maybe useful for live (not only for synths but also for filter, fx etc)

My experience with the 606 has been good. It has a distinct clear sound, but allows you to dirty them up as well. I always sample in Long mode, part because it saves memory, but mostly because it gives a dusty and raw sound. It has over 46 effects and there's envelopes too.

However, I do hate that the master volume is kinda low, but that can be overcome with a mixer. Velocity pads can be adjusted as well as the sensitivity. Pads do feel good and the knobs feel all pro, but the rest of the plastic buttons feel kinda cheaps with that annoying click clack sound. I feel all the buttons should've been rubber.

Its great for the work I do, which is underground Hip Hop and you can mutate any instrument to sound like another instrument, and after you've done that, you can dissect that sonic realm and pull out other sounds and melodies that otherwise never existed with the original sample.

So far my 606 has been a great little machine- its simplicity is great. Just sample & go, there's no timewasting with these things & there's not much of a learning curve to it. Unlike an MPC there's no loading between songs/patterns etc. Just switch it on & its ready (in a few seconds, natch). It was my first sampler & continues to be my most used.

The sequencer is killer too, really flexible. Decent FX (super flexible, designed to inspire new approaches to your music rather than being simply to sound good- take that as you choose).

Only downsides with it is the USB (on mine anyway) can crash the machine when connecting/disconnecting, getting new smartmedia cards is out of the question (512mb, that's all), there's no real pitch shift & has a chunky timestretch. Oh yeah, it doesn't cook dinner when I'm hungry either. But really, these are all minor niggles & easy to avoid. Use a card reader for dodging the USB crash & a free program like Audacity for the pitch shift/timestretch.

Sometimes I love it or hate it!I miss true pitchshift,manual chopping and saving the f***** parameters of the effects!
On the other hand these "disadvantages" make me speed up the workflow!(plus i love the dbeam!)

i do hate not being able to save parameters... but i love the machine... i use it equally with my 2kxl... for samples and all... although i dont twist and grind all of my samples.. i lave playing with the fx's when im just chilling id still recommend it... i do wish for more voices tho...

since im currenty SPless, im considering either a 606 or 404sx but im fucking torn. Doesnt the 606 have manual chopping?

Its possible to manual chop on the 606.

Just sample a long part and adjust the start and end points without truncating the rest. Resample the adjustment and then go back to the original sample and make new a start and end point adjustment and resample that and so on.

Also with the P606 software, you can sample patterns into a single pad.

woah thanks homie haha... ive only had the machine literally a year, my first sampler. I dont really feel the need to upgrade to anything...it does what i want and i'm pretty happy.
I think if u wanna compare the 606 to the other sp's, the most important thing about the 606 is that it has MUTE GROUPS, meaning that u can have pads cut eachother off automatically according to its "mute group". I ended up copping a 303 after getting the 606 just to try it out ... but without the mute groups i was mad frustrated and gave up (Im a lazy producer lol)
but i mean whatever u choose, u get used to it... the WORST thing u can do is fantasize about new gear all the time bcuz u'll spend more time on craigslist then actually making beats.. and thats wack

lol, i got a new (temporary) job and am finally able to get the things i want b4 it expires and have been experiencing that, and it sucks... only thing i coppen was a scratch mixer( always wanted one) other than that i have been getting stacks of records in prep for the day they say not to come back...

the synth sounds that can be achieved with the sp606 are vast. I'm not sure if thats a factor for you but with the oscilator effect and the enveloped effect you have a basic modeling synth. if you use the oscilator as both effects you can make some pretty rich sounds. you have 4 oscilators and 2 lfos if you use the osc in tandem. then resample and it's really endless.

I was married to an MPC3000- then around '05/06 a few of my boys were copping MPC1000s and I got jeal- they'd be throwing them in their backpacks & bringing them around, while my 3K was sort of 'installed' in my studio- big with Midi chords & Zip drives hanging off it-

I always loved Roland stuff. I had an MS-1, a DR-660 & a VS-1680 before and every time I looked at Sweetwater & MusiciansFriend catalogs I was so curious about the SP-606- I loved the way it looked (younger and hotter than my fat wife!) so one of those companies had a 'factory-resealed' deal and I cold ordered the 606 and I've been in love ever since.

I honesty didn't know the half when I got it- now it is my favorite piece of gear. I remember when I brought it to an electronic jam session for the first time & was freaking the effects and my boys were like "Cot Damn". I never- I repeat NEVER thought I'd rock beat machines live, but getting this piece really broadened my horizons- and you can really get deep into the machine and get lost in the effects & resampling & synthing- needless to say my experience with the 606 is all good.

The no pitching thing sux- but 606 Man (forum head- where you @ mang?) claimed that you can "mpc style" pitch using the P-606 software. I tried messing with P-606 once and got bored but I might give it a go again. Any new head with the 606 gotta do a search & check out 606 man's posts- he was uncovering mad mysteries of the 606 and leaking hella techniques!
