Sounds like the break used on Jeru tha Damaja's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, but where Primo sampled it, IDK.

yep, totally. i've got that album but i just can't bring myself to sample primo's. is that dumb?

No, its called respect. I've got tons of instrumentals of Hip Hop from the 90's but I never sampled the open drum parts. If I found the original break though, then I'll definitely sample that.

Did you try websites like whosampledit.com or thebreaks.com to find the original source?

Back in the days there were drum break records like Now & Laters, even Bernard Purdie did a solo album of just him on drums with the funky shit in 2000.

thanks for that site, it's pretty interesting. never knew that was a sample of prince screaming in da lench mob's 'freedom got an ak'. that break is apparently from 'give it to you' by a band called Upp. doesn't look like i'll be finding that in the 99 cent bin anytime soon. oh well, thank god for the 300 breaks kit :)
