Flying Lotus? Nosaj Thing?

Post by JointChief »

Where do these guys get their samples?

and what kind of equipment do they use?

I know fly-lo uses the sp 303, but how does he do what he does?

Thanks!

“People get caught up in gear, but it gets in the way of making the music,” he says. “When I need to find something new, I don't have to update my shit; I just have to update my brain.” -Flying Lotus

In other words, he just has talent.

There a bit of talk about gear in this interview. Not what you were looking for probably, but good advice regardless I think.

I would've guessed that he uses many sounds from his own field recordings and heavily processed stuff. But I wouldn't have expected him to favor software over his gear.

Cool interview, bridge, thanks for sharing!

just keep messing with sounds... everyone in the end samples a sound that most other people have already sampled... its what you do to it *after* you got the sample that turns it into somethin crazy!

. if you took the samples off your SP and gave them to someone like flying lotus.. he would come up with shit you hadn't thought of.. I guess its just about practice and experience and getting way out into uncharted territory, see what you find.. and knowing when to keep something, and when to ditch it

they find their samples amidst rainbow skies and swirling mirrors, records materialize at their whim. the dust billows shift purple and swarm their minds with infinite psychological resources. the colors taste like chicken and the sound looks like mist.

Asking how flylo does his shit is like asking for an easy way to play guitar like jimi Hendrix. Some people are just gifted, and that's why flylo is as popular as he is, he's a master of what he does. You could find out his exact workflow, and even use his same samples and it wouldn't be the same. The dude is just gifted. Focus more on doing you, and don't compare your beats to the greats... it may never be the same

A lot of his sounds are from going outside and recording weird, and odd sounds.. Example like bees, cows, and etc. Compress, reverb and distort the sounds to sound good is what I think he does... but you should just make music for yourself not FlyLo
