workin' on a tape
I have been trying to buckle down and make a tape. Using just a turntable, 404 and 303. It is kinda like a new years resolution. I have six trax so far. My question to you guys is "What gets you motivated? For me it is diggin' through dollar/2 dollar bins. I love to use something that is basically trash to the original owner and the record shop.
On another note about gear, I have a mv-8800, but, long story short, it is not as fast as the 404, you can get involved in some BS and never finish a beat. I love the 404/303 combo.
Let me know what you guys think about both of these issues. Thankx, --Jeff-

Honestly...
gettin in 'the zone' is the only way I can work on something for a long period of time - whether a single track or a bunch.. gotta be in the same headspace for it all.
which lately consists of eating a load of painkillers, then just when they peak, drinking a strong (double strong!) cup of coffee.. the next 6 hours I am in the zone.
I can be creative with or without drugs, I find its just more fun this way (do something? or do something while high?
only one answer!) , and the coffee helps me to stay focused on the task (also without it, I find that being seated for a long time it's hard to get into a dancey/groovey feeling, so if i produce for long sessions, everything becomes like laid back chillout eventually haha)
also I work alot better between midnight and sunrise for some reason.. I dunno why.. daytime I just never get any work done

Re: workin' on a tape
if im in a slump with the music i usually take a little time off from messin with the beats. instead i watch movies, read books ive been meaning to, read comics, try and exercise(ha), spend time with friends and/or family. myabe even take a short vacation if i can afford it, or do some outdoor stuff. just soak up life pretty much. during this whole time i listen to alot of music, im always listening to music. then whenever some good vinyl comes along (and i can get a sitter) i pretty much lock myself in the "studio".
edit: hey did you move? i thought you lived in san antonio?

I build up my sound until I get the feeling. I'll make a bunch of synth patches and sample them into the computer. Get some samples all ready in a folder. Record a bunch of new drums to the 303. Then one day I will feel it and have everything I need to get busy.

i live a nocturnal schedule, where i don't go to bed til usually like 5 in the morn, and sleep till about 3 in the afternoon, and i usually do the most work between like 12-5AM, its a horrible habit, but i also reaaally like working at that time of night, i feel different during those hours and i can just finally do some shit that i had been puttin off all day, plus you know i'm pullin on the bong all night as well, that does it big for me as well

Re: workin' on a tape
sup folks,
i'm back on the forums, lost the password to my old account which i created a couple months back.
anyway, to the OP, how do you find working with the combo 404+303 together?
for the last few months, i've been busy with school and stuff, also my SP404 was stuck during transit for like a month (i live in Vietnam, shipping anything here is expensive and time-consuming, not to mention all the troubles you'd have to go through with import authorities).
i'm gonna start working on my sp404 soon, i literally just got it 2 days ago. i used to make music on computer with reason, but i feel that making music on computer is too distracting, i always ended up surfing the internet while looking for some inspiration. but when i was actually making music, i got in the zone for a while, may 1 day straight. when i got stuck, i just get out there, go chill with friends and spend time with my family, stuff like that, kinda getting away from music until i get my mood back.
sorry for the long post .

Re: workin' on a tape
i charge my batteries and hit the picnic table in the park with a couple of beers and a one-hitter. fill up my ipod with whatever i sampled the night before. or, if i get new vinyl i might dub them to cassette the night before and bring my walkman. i just can't sit in my cramped little apartment with no windows, i hate it.
