anyone using their sampler and just a controller and vst's

Post by springwater »

was wondering if anyone just uses a controller and vst's to sample themselves. or even a keyboard. i was in a situation where all i had was a keyboard and my 555 and i got busy with playing live and sampling into the loop capture, track for track and baning the pads together in the pattern sequencer. just wondering if anyone else is rocking it that way. and if so, are you doing anything really interesting that i might not know about.

I'm using an E-MU XL-7 Command Station (synth+sequencer in one box) for sequencing the SP-404SX. I have a Sequential Circuits Prophet 2000 (oldschool keyboard sampler with analog filters) used as a midi keyboard going into the XL-7. Additionally I have a Waldorf Microwave XT (synthesizer) sequenced by the XL-7 too.

That way I can
1) play the SP-404's pads on the keyboard with velocity
2) record the pads on different midi tracks which enables you to mute tracks (and the pads they're playing) seperately -> perfect for live jamming
3) benefit from the much tighter and bigger better faster sequencer of the XL-7
4) and and and

All that is audio-wise running into a small Mackie 1202VLZ mixer. The Sub-Out of the mixer is connected to the input of the SP-404, so I can sample everything connected to the mixer (PC, Microwave XT, XL-7, etc) by the press of a button. Very convenient I must say.
