Re: 16 PAD 404 ( like Boon Doc ) using a cheap drum machine
a cheap tr-626 is a good find. those will valuable soon.
i got a padkontrol and it's very nice, responsive, intuitive, etc...
but
i got a shitty corner pad. it sticks or just doesn't respond sometimes. lately, i'm wondering if a mpd would last longer.
out of curiousity, has boon doc ever been signed or done a song that was radio friendly?

yo mine has exactly the same issue - bottom left pad.
I opened up the PK and managed to 'fix it' - the rubber seemed to be a little bit caught on the corner or something underneath, so wasnt quite aligned properly... It still mis-triggers veeery occasionally but it hasn't stayed stuck down anymore.
it works well now, but if im doing something i dont want to mess up, I disable that pad and dont use it.
I'm also considering getting an MPD - mainly because I want more knobs/etc on it.
Samples.

bottom right on mine. the mpd24 is looking good to me. knobilicious, plus you can buy spare parts online.
but i think i'll wait till my padkontrol is quite a bit more beatdown.

Yeah, I tend to agree with that, but I think Boon Doc's main strength is not the auto-chopping, but more so the drum programming and basslines. I have a feeling he knows the auto chop stuff isn't all that impressive creatively, but he doesn't give a damn.
If you like some of his beats, check out his beat battles, should be new movies online now.
also - i don't think anyone was being racist with the monkey remark, but it should be a reminder that we must be careful with our words
True, ... but we're probably all just monkeys.

It's easier to make waltzes with 12 pads, so I'm sticking to using only my SP.
I would only change the sampler if I found a sampler with like 64 pads

Yeah, in my experience even with my MV8800 I tend to use not really more than 4 pads simultaneously and max. like 10 from one padbank when I'm recording a lot of stuff in one go... meaning for me it wouldn't matter if I had 12, 16 or 64 pads.
I probably would go insane with 64 pads, and I wouldn't need one for pitched stuff, as my midi keyboard has like 49 keys that's more than I ever need.

Sold my mpc200xl because I got stuck in the loop it up chop it to even part manual time stretch shit. I still auto slice in ableton, but just I slice random chunks and get random slices, and just flip whatever I get into something new. Take the over thinking out of it and ust play with the sounds you got. To the dudes wanting a pad controller, I have an MPD24 and would recommend it for sure.

Yes, but you're going to hate those pads.

No, he never got signed, but he definitely did put out some actual songs where he is rapping / singing. Pretty good stuff and much more mainstream! It's actually pretty soulful hip-hop and you should be able to find it over at his myspace page.
( http://www.myspace.com/booniemayfield , only one song up, but it's pretty indicative for his other songs. )
