16 PAD 404 ( like Boon Doc ) using a cheap drum machine

Hi,

Ever watched Boon Doc on youtube and wished you could play 4 bars ( 16 slice ) samples smoothly like he does ? ( instead of the limiting 12 slices of the 404 )

I can now !...and so can you.

I bought a cheap tr-626 (£50) from ebay, and mapped its outputs using
colin frasers simple tut. http://www.colinfraser.com/misc/tr626seq.htm

On the 626 there are 2 drum banks a) One with 16 sounds ( one for each of the 626's pads) (b) A second one with 14 sounds.

Heres How:

i) I set the SECOND set via midi to correspond to one of the banks containing my 12 drums on the 404. ( i left 2 out )

ii) I loaded up my 16 sample slices into the 404 ( the first 12 will go into one bank and the final 4 into the next bank )

iii) I then mapped the FIRST ( 16 sound ) drum set of the 626 to the 16 pads of the 404 containing the 16 sample chops.

I then write all the drum patterns on the 626 using only the second bank.

iiii) Set the drum pattern playing on the 626


This leaves the full 16 pads of the first set to play the full 4 bars.
( also the blue light is flashing at the tempo of the 626, which is a great visual indicator of when to press the next pad in the 16 step sequence )

Nothing innovative, but I hope it helps some people realise they can do this
without a great deal of hassle - ive only owned my 404 & 626 for 3 days !!

p.s. I assume this will be possible for any cheap 16 pad drum machine where you can edit the midi channel and note numbers to match the 404's
values.

i often use my padKontrol to trigger samples, leaving the 404 in Pattern Mode to switch between sections

extra pads are always useful : )

16 pads vs 12 pads:

16 pads is really good for chops..

BUT

If you like playing in your stuff, 12 pads is better, because it's one octave of notes... you can sample a whole bunch of keys onto your sp, and when you're playing, you just switch banks to get different octaves... It's a whole lot more intuitive on a 12 pad machine(sp 404 in my case) than on an mpc where you would have 1 1/3 of an octave on a bank.

I honestly never thought of the 12 notes in an octave.

( for those who dont know: A, A#,B, C, C#,D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G# )

So, I've got the best of both worlds !

i'm actually thinking of getting a padkontrol/mpd. Leaning more towards the padKontrol though..

it does look nice. Does the padKontrol have velocity?

I hooked up my pc-300 controller to the 404 and it was really nice the way you could just gently tap the keys to get subtle hits or whack them to get them really loud.

a pad setup that would do this would be amazing

The PadKotrol is velocity sensitive as is the MPD. I actually haven't hooked up my 404 to a keyboard yet to test out the velocity sensitivity, but I can imagine it must be cool.

My band mate has a MPC 1000 that I use quite a lot, and I don't really like the pads on that which is why I'm thinking padkontrol. I figured the pads n the mpd would be similar.

I've seen people using the padkontrol in lots of different imaginative ways which makes me think it would be more adaptable.....

Plus it has glowing red pads to match the 404

at first I didnt really admire what he were doing, I mean his beats sounded nice and shit, but all he really did was chooping nice sample into 16 parts and flipping those parts.

now I accidentaly hit a yt video with him, where he shows his 2 new beats.
First one is okay, but the second one ( he says that it was made for a beat battle - some cat just wanted to battle with him ), he shows the sample, then the parts he took, and then he presents the beat...

DAMM! the beat is pure fire! plus those basslines! I got respect for him now // even if he still acts like a monkey in those videos.

no offense but dont try to be like boon doc. even tho he has skills, to watch him auto chop beat after beat and make each one the exact same way is pretty corny after a while. i was inspired by him at first till i realized the ease of his beats, meaning the sample banging part. there was a video where he played keyboards and all that which was cool but is was layer with this corny ass beat banging. just pad after pad. why even chop the beat up like that if you just bang it all out in the same order, he might as well just time stretch. thats what i hate most about mpc is that any corny dude can bang out beat after beat with only knowing how to auto chop and load up samples. no layer of samples or nuffin, just one 16 beat sample, bang bang bang. so no offense to anyone who does this faithfully, to each his own, you know. but dont put that dude on a pedastal. and you might not wanna call a black guy a monkey, kinda fucked up "el". unless he's jumping around and eating banannas, comparing a black man to a monkey is pretty fucked up. on a sidenote elhauna, nice lp.

yo spring. at first I didnt intend to offend anyone. regardless of the skin colour I'd call anybody acting like a monkey, a guy who acts like a monkey. And it's not simply calling guy "a monkey". It's all about the behaviour. You can always say that somebody act in a stupid way, but you should never say that "he's stupid". boonie is an afroamerican so yeah, it might have been an "unfortunate" comparison, but believe me, Im not a racist at all, and I love all my brothers, white,yellow, green and especially black ones.

im afraid you kinda missed the point of my post which was to give Boonie some love for the way he flipped the sample - cuz he did it differently than almost always, and it turned out really nice! (i dont wanna try to sound like him though ;D).
But of course in general, you're definitely right about this ~mpc thing.

and yeah, such comparison might sound "pretty fucked up" and I guess im not gonna use it anymore

there's really no creativity to that shit at all, it's boring as fuck to watch and listen to. a good rap beat is all about re-arranging slices to get that choppy feel and rhythm, and re-imagining a group of sounds in a way that no-one else would have thought of

anyone could get the same record some of these Youtube clowns have and make the same beat in 5 minutes. fail


also - i don't think anyone was being racist with the monkey remark, but it should be a reminder that we must be careful with our words
