SP-606 = more advanced 505??

Post by GDS »

Is the 606 just a more advanced beefed up 505??

also can you use the P606 software to write a pattern on your PC and transfer it to the 606 for preformance?

I went from the 505 after a year & a half to the 606, and I would say that's a pretty good way to phrase it.

Especially if you think that touch-sensitive pads, huge memory capabilities for stereo sampling on weeks & weeks of beats, dual effects, and (in my opinion) a little boost in sound output count as 'more advanced'!

Maybe like Megatron vs. Optimus Prime!!
If anyone wants to continue the comparison... are the people just acoustic musicians? Who's the MPC?

The 505 has got a better chopping system, in the 606 you only have autochop and can't manually adjust the chopping points. I think that no SP is more advanced than another, they are just... different (well, maybe the 303 is an upgrade from the poor ol' 202  ). Ah, and also the 505 is the only SP capable of chromatically tuning samples (ie playing a single sample across the pads in different pitches). I really don't know why they left this out on the 606, it is such a basic sampling function.
But yeah, otherwise the 606 is a bit more advanced.

606 should of been the 505 on steroids but its not. One got better stuff than the other and one lacks stuff than the other. So it all comes down to preference. If you like dual effects, velocity pads, play beats with your shlong via D-Beam (Thats why its called the Dbeam folks  ) and USB connection then the 606 is for you. If you like keyboard style capabilities, full control over chops, edit pattern measurements like whenever, and awsome pitch scaling then the 505 is for you.

As for me I love the 606, even though I had the 505 but the 606 seems more Hip Hop oriented while the 505 is more electronica oriented. Plus its more bulkier and looks like a mini-MV8000.

Yes, I also prefer the layout of the 606. And in any case I always chop breaks "manually" (adjusting start/end points), partly because it's more precise and partly because that was the only way to do it in the 404, which was what I used before. Autochop on the 606 works fine almost always with drum loops anyway, if you're a bit lazy
And the D-Beam is great! Not much practical use but really fun to play with (I love those synth leads in "hex blues" scale)!

Thanks for the reply's! my 606 is on it's way. I still have the unanswered question of the P606 software. I just wanted to know if I can write patterns on my PC using samples loaded on the sp-606 and then export the patterns ( not the audio of the patterns, the actual sequenced data) to my sp-606 to use for live performance?

Thanks again SP Forums!

Yes, you can use samples from the SP 606 and construct patterns within P606. P606 has 16 tracks to build a pattern. Think of the SP as a controller even though you can use both at the same time or use one over the other.

I believe you can import the patterns to the SP 606 by using EXT Sampling but I don't remember since I have used the program only a few times. I'm more of an analog type of guy and prefer less time on the computer.

:D Yep, with EXT Sampling you can create your pattern in P606 and import it to a pad. Its like sampling a pattern into a sample. I tried it last night and damn, it opened alot of doors. I didn't realize the potential the SP and P606 combo had.

I've always wanted a feature on the 606 to sample patterns and there it was the whole effing time. There's always something new to learn.

hey dudes -

can you guys tell me what the Panning is like on the sp-606?

is there ANY panning?

or is it like hard-left, hard-right and centre ONLY, like on the 505?

i'm wondering if you can pan stuff across the whole 360 spectrum.....

thots?

There's 2 effects that are specifically for pan Fauna

BPM Auto Pan and Auto Pan

Both have options of Depth Rate and Wave...controlled by the three knobs... but you cant actually control left to right manually..you just have options of different rates in combination with different wave pattens.

You CAN control manually left to right with the Tumbling effect, but it will have that tumbling effect attached to it.

thx for the reply teewok...

so basically, if i just wanted to have a sample triggering slightly left of centre, I'd have to resample it w/ one of these MFX on it?

i don't need stuff to pan ear to ear...i'm thinking more about where i can place it in the 360 field.

oh shoot.. i totally forgot..

u can adjust the pan of each pad in the menu (Left15 - Right15, or u can set it to random).. so u don't need to resample there.

But I dont understand what u mean by 360 field maybe someone else can answer that.

oh. i just meant, can you pan stuff straight ahead, or slightly left, or a little more left, all the way left, etc (or to the right, obvs)....i wasn't trying to sound fancy!

cuz on the 505, you only have three choices: all the way left, centre, all the way right. its cool, but limiting.

on the 404 you got nothing. straight ahead centre, or apply pan/trem effect each time.

so i was wondering if the 606 has pan settings for each sample, without it being an applied effect. but better then the 505. sounds like yes?
