i agree, sampling is an excellent thing.

its like paying homage to those that came before you, and putting your twist to it. it will have endless possibilities d/t the different approaches.

for me it's not so much about paying homage.. as being able to completely blow peoples perceptions out of the water... and you can do things to sounds that just cant be done any other way.. its kinda the opposite of synths (which i also love)

it is no prob for little people like me to sample because if the big dawgs sue me they can only get +/- 2000-5000 bucks because thats all i am worth. If you blow up the can really get some cash. I love sampling. I've been doing it since since I was 16, but then in my early 20's I heard so much about peeps getting sued by the original artists that I went to make beats strictly on synths. Of course I've made some dope stuff on the keys but it wasn't the same as choppin' and flippin' and getting that grimey sound that attracted me to make beats in the first place. Something special about sampling vintage music, like the equipment used at that time to record it and will never be heard again due to technology evolving. Plus that snap crackle and pop always amazes me, don't know why. So, at some point I got frustrated and said "Fuck it, I'm gonna do what my heart feels and love" and ditched the synths and returned to crate digging. I'm not a famous and signed artist, why should they sue me. And now I'm in freedom-mode more than I was in my synth days because I've returned to my roots.

Sampling is where it all started, not just for hip hop but house and electronic music as well. I'm currently working on a 5 song EP for a label in France. I'll give more info as I get closer to release date, contract stuff is still going down. The issue at hand is copyrighting. This is effecting my approach to making tracks for the project. After reading up on copyrighting, I'm amazed that hip hop has made it this far. While I like the challenge, it has slowed me down. Adapt, improvise and overcome!

Yeah, it's the best thing there is. I can't understand how some people think it's lazy and unoriginal to sample something and reuse it in your own way. I feel that many folks disrespect the sample based genres because all they see is knob twisting and a spinning record or something. Then think that's all there is to it but don't get that there is so much work behind all that that you can't see, like setting up things and compose ad arrange samples and stuff.

Concerning the copyright issue, I don't think anyone who doesn't sell his music in any way will get sued whatsoever. Might be another thing if you do it live, though. Maybe most of the artists that got sampled either don't know about that or don't really care if someone used a single guitar note out of one of their songs.
