Anyone know how to programme drums on 3, like for waltz? Is it possible?

round up.

rather than making one bar of 3/4, make 3 bars of 4/4 with yr hits landing where they would on 3/4 pattern. 12 is the lowest common denominator (4 x 3).

same thing for making 5/4 beats, round up to 20 (4 x 5).

you should also consider 6/8, which can have a nice 3/4 feel with more swing. just depends on where you land yr accents.

I believe A Tribe Called Quest's Electric Relaxation is a 3/4 time sig and Lyrics To Go. Check them out to get a feel of that timing. Its like an illusion that its a 4/4 but you feel like a note is left out but its not. Real freaky.

Yep yep, thats the illusion I was talking about. Drums are easy to get away with in that time sig because you can just program them to be 1/4. Check out the first 3 Dave Bruebeck albums like Time Out and Time Further Out, on the credits he actually explains how to accomplish such outrageous timing such as 5/4, 7/6, and 9/16. Its a really simple method; the group actually thought they was doing 4/4 beats.

that tribe song isn't in 3/4 though, its just loops every 3 bars, and there are tons of songs like that, bluffin off of the unseen comes to mind, and then theres that tribe song word play produced by jay dee that has a 3 bar drum pattern and mixes it with a 4 bar looped sample, that would be pretty easy to achieve on a 404, gotta have the 4 bar sample loop 3 times, so 12 bars all together, and then just restart the drum pattern every three bars and it fits in there 4 times, as for a hip hop song in 3/4, i'm havin trouble thinking of one, i think there's def a kankick track in 3/4 but i'm drawin a blank

or in 6/8, idk, which leads me to my question:

what is the difference between 3/4 and 6/8? because obviously you can count that song both ways. im guessing it has something to do with note value, which i understand as far as quarter notes, eight notes, etc, but idk how it relates to signature..

any help?

3/4 is waltzes and 6/8 is used often in jazz.

in 3/4 time the 3 = how many beats per bar and the 4 = the note value of a quarter note. listen to prefuse 73, he does some weird time signatures sometimes.

you're right about that tribe sample, its 4/4 but portions of the sample might be 3/4. you can have both 3/4 and 4/4 at the same time, which is called a polyrhythm.

The first one are 3 bars of 4/4 and the second is 4 bars of 3/4. You can see that they are equally longso you could set your pattern to 3 bar length and tap in 4 bars of 3/4 measure. Be aware that you don't play along to the numbers on the SP display because it counts in fours!
