Yea, I don't knock anyone who samples mp3's or whatever. I just have fun doing it my way.

And at the end of the day, its all about a dope beat!

i do!!!
netflix is the shit but i dont sample much from it.
i found a really good sample from jojo dancer, this movie with richard pryor in it, sort of an autobiography loosely based on himself. but theres tone of shit to pull from netflix, im just never in a position to sample when im watching movies.

I hook up a PSP Slim with custom firmware and about a 1000 games + emulators for NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Master System, NeoGeo, PS1. Alot of games have special sound test menu's you can scroll through.

also vinyl, cassette, youtube.

I don't know how corny this might sound to you sampling cats, but hear me out. I've been waiting for my Mac to get upgraded since my HD died, and I've got my sp303, but the manual is on the .PDF file that I can't acess right now. So I know there's a sequencer in it, but I can't really figure it out without the manual in front of me. So I decided to sample from some hip hop apps from my iTouch. Good thing I had all the right cables. I'm still without a memory card right now as well, so I've had to downgrade the samples, so theyre pretty ghetto once I finish the sample and play it back. But I miss the way Ableton can keep the beat in the bpm you want, and I don't think the sp303 can do it that way. So some beats are their own bpm, and I don't have a way to make them the same. But at least some of the beats are crunchy, and I can mess around with them until my Mac returns home this week, and then hopefully order some new memory cards in eBay.

But I also sampled this sad flute sample from a game, and I want to flip a beat around it. I'd also like to order a cheap turntable & DJ mixer later, but for now, that's what I have to sample from.

Im in the school of thought of those who sample from any audio source.

Since i started producing ive sampled

-Vinyl
-CDs
-PS2 Games
-DVDs
-Tapes
-Youtube
-Through the built in Mic
-TV

Im thinking of buying a cheap VCR to sample VHS tapes which i have a ton of.

One things certain though and thats that Drums for me are always from Vinyl.

No1 is Vinyl - Charity shop fodder and freaking the old collection in new ways
itunes store prevues! - plug the sp into the headphone socket on your PC and flip through the catagories and take your snippets at will
Music blogs - my faves specialise in 60's electronic music, bollywood, jazz whatever..

I pretty much only sample from vinyl. I have done some game flips and I have a nice stash of cassettes, but I really prefer digging thru records

People can say yea that's elitist or it's stupid b/c you can only sample what you have in your crates...but way I see it is, it's a labor of love. We are doing sampled based music, essentially stealing other people's notes and sounds to make our own music --- I almost feel like it's a karmic requirement to go out and hunt down the records...but that's just me.

Also, regardless of what anyone says, digital music files and cds have a much thinner sound than vinyl...I have done comparisons sampling tracks off of vinyl and off of CDs that I had laying around and the dynamics of the music on CD is wack comparatively...NOT SAYING YOU ARE WACK IF YOU DON'T SAMPLE VINYL -- I don't do the elitist thing, but that's my 2 cents

On a side note...I don't know why people shy away from albums that have had a famous sample pulled from them...sooo many times I dig thru shit like GK and The Pips just as an example, and there are so many great samples nobody touched. It's like people grab the first thing they find that they think is really hot and leave the rest of the record alone!! Also it's all about how you flip it, if you are a chopper and player then it really doesn't matter, in theory you could flip the same sample as someone who looped it and make something totally diff, once you figure out chopping and playing back the creativity and exponential possibilities open up. looping totally limits options imo
