there are so many people on here that produce completely full chopped up sample and drum tracks on the sp with tons of variations using the sequencer, you can do way more than just using loops, give some thought into how to set chops within the basic rhythmic contraints given and work with it, and for a trick i know alot of people use for drums, resample them so there is some space before the drum hit and quantize it earlier than you need it and mess with the start time to place it just where you want it, gotta think outside the box with this machine man, its got the illest potential

Use Reaper. It's far better than Garageband. And it's free, unless you decide to license it, which is only $60! If you don't want to pay, the only nerfing to the program is that you have to wait 5 seconds for it to start. Seriously, that's it. Otherwise it's a functional DAW.

It's a little confusing because it's an opensource program, but don't let that and the fact that it's "free" stop you. Ask a computer programmer about Linux, it's kind of the same deal.

Oh yeah, you do need a physical interface. EMU has some USB stuff for as little $150 or so, and their stuff usually sounds pretty good. Better than Behringer or M-Audio if you ask me.

you don't need an interface if your computer has a 1/8" input. you can run an RCA to 1/8" cable from the line out of your sp.

Disclaimer:
Make sure ur computer has a line in plug.. itll be the same size as the headphone plug, and right next to the headphone plug. One of the smallest newer macbook pros (13.3" base model) ive seen doesnt have any linein.. or maybe i just couldnt find it lol

yeah you just need a cable like this:

end 1: 2x male RCA plugs

end 2: 1/8" stereo headphone plug

now set the BPM in garageband, create some audio tracks.. then record your 404 in one track at a time.

and garage band is really a great starting point, so easy to use.

He probably meant to say 'simple patterns', but in the hands of an elite 404 ninja, the SP-404 is very capable of delivering entire beats / songs, just look at the Arena area or Music area, lots of people do. :)

Doesn't mean it's easy. ;)

this whole thread covers what has been vexing me for more than a month. i went to guitar center to buy a usb mixer, i got talked into buying the apogee duet because it has a very awesome sound card, then i got home and found out/realized that my newish apple macbook DOESNT have firewire anymore because usb 2.0 is faster - WHAT THE FUCK, also there is no convertor for this scenario... i spent 500 on the duet and all i ever did was take it out of the box and look at it once... if you want to buy it for 450 pm me ... you can record 2 mono tracks simulteneously and its sound is grand and leaves alot of headroom
