how would you go about using a sample drum kit to make a beat in this program?
i understand the midi vsti's and stuff, but do i need a plug in or something for samples? this is probly such a noob question but i dont have the manual and this is the first time im messing with really making shit off the cmputer so if someone could help me out that would be the shit

There are 2 instruments you can drag and drop into a MIDI track to do this:

1. IMPULSE

Let's you create a drum kit with up to 8 pads. It handles filtering, enveloping, velocity, LFOs, effects, side chaining... This is the most simple and quick instrument for percussion.

2. DRUM RACK

More of the above, but has slots for 128 samples.

or

separate channels of simpler

or

follow actions (not a drum kit but really effective for percussion)

cooll thank yous so much so... drum rack, impulse and simpler are vst sampler drum machines basically? and they come with the program? and hurling your method 'follow actions' is like something up in the top drop downs?

this program is bananas i understand how ppl just get right into this and spit tracks out left and right, but i feel like its gonna take me a month to incorporate it into my setup  fucking computers!

drum rack impulse and simpler is free, so is session view(which is basically a drum machine in itself)

you could actually just load in sounds to the session view and make midi mappings to each one, and set the global quantize to none. this would allow you to play the clips like a drum machine

the follow actions are options inside of each clips

so say you load in 8 bongo samples in the same track so they are vertically descending.
you highlight them and turn on the follow actions (read the manual on this, its hard to get into detail) and set a speed, say one step. now they will play one after another like the monome does in max/msp. you can trigger individual steps out of the 8 and the phrase will continue from that step after it plays, allowing you to do some crazy sequence stuff.

theres too much to cover on follow actions but check out Tom Cosm's website for the downlow, and youtube also

thanks alot for the responses... i figured out the sampler/drum machine vsts after reading this post originally... im stuck now on say i put a phrase into the sampler it for some reason only plays like a second of the begining.. i tried messin with those arrow icons thinking that would help but it didnt, you dont have to answer that query ill probably figure it out... but thanks alot for the help overall .. ive also been hitting up dsf for info since alot of those producers use ableton....
on a side note to anyone reading this they have battles with some pretty good user posted samplepacks on dubstepforums.com that are cool to download even if you dont enter the battle or like dub

hmm it did that in drum racks too?

could be the amp envelopes, ASDR, but usually they have a good setting by default

take a screenshot of your device with sample loaded and it will be much easier to tell whats up

ps. DSF production bibles ftw. most people there dont even make dubstep anymore anyway! haha its just the only place people a lot of people know where to go, and they definitely don't want DogsOnAcid or gearslutz

i probably just need to mess with it more, the envelope may be the problem or actually maybe i didnt make the measure long enough to play the whole thing... i think thats it now that im thinking about it, i wasnt really sure how long of a measure i was doing, i think it was like a 1 bar .. what i really got to figure out is how to punch in the midi notes on the electribe and send that into ableton.. i can get stop/start in sync with electribe patterns and even assign the knobs to ableton, but i havent figured out the midi playing off it yet, is that midi dump?

and yeah everyone on here should read through dubstepforums.com production section, its not all about dub and the 'production bible' can basically be applied to any style of beat music, although they still havent done the 'hardware' section yet, hahaha

ps i checked out the post on dsf you did, nice, helped me understand the follow actions which is cool cuz the other dude i talked to about it said he mainly uses that other mode where you see the long colored rectangles and he stretches them out and stuff to make his sequence, it sounded like a pain in the ass cuz im used to kind of doing the rec live anyway, so thanks thats a cool time saver,,, and then i guess you can just increase the bars if you want it to make a song like A-B-A-B.. i forgot can you make it go back to the top of the column? i also downloaded those ableton files you posted so i could see what a project in there looks like from someone who knows how to work it! haha
