I remember reading about this right before i moved and being pissed, but then got so caught up in moving that I forgot...

This summer someone broke into weaponshouse aka speakerbruiser aka sixtoo's apartment and stole a bunch of shit including the hard drives and back-up drives that had his entire output as sixtoo including a bunch of unreleased stuff. totally fucked. his output as sixtoo(especially from the duration project on) represent some of my most listened to albums, singles and EP's from the last 8 years...so depressing to think of that shit just being wiped out, and all of the unreleased stuff that could have seen the light of day at some point(I can dream can't I?)

no point really, just a rant. I first found out about this from the elektron-users.com forums, the only other place that I post. speakerbruiser/sixtoo had just got a monomachine and machinedrum and was planning on restructuring his writing and live shows around them. he was posting up and within a short period of time pushing the community and the use of the boxes for more hip-hop type stuff...and then he got ripped off and had to sell them...which sucks because he was making some dope ass beats with those boxes...

http://cargocollective.com/weaponshouse#114977/Sixtoo-1997-2007-R-I-P

end of rant.
don't be a dick and steal art!

yeah, i remember reading about it on one of the MTL forums. the crime in my fair city is completely off the hook. in fact, it's part of why i don't post up photos of my studio in here (or elsewhere).

every single week there are stories about bands getting all of their stuff jacked - either from their studio, their apartment, their van while they're loading stuff in, their van while they're doing soundcheck, or sometimes, straight off the stage (mics & guitars and stuff).

i actually remember sixtoo posting years ago that he and a friend were in a cafe using an electribe esx, and while they were just sitting there drinking coffees, somebody jacked it (from a bag or something). so he's been hit a couple of times.

montreal owes a lot of musicians. if you come up here to play, be very careful.

yeah, even with the weather (it's snowing right now) its pretty dope. but the musician-theft thing is unreal.

@fauna: I was going to apply for graduate school up there, but wound up in southern california instead...but there's so much dope music and art going on up there...and apparently theft...which is a coincidence because I just watched this documentary the other day called "dear zachary: a letter to a son about his father" http://www.dearzachary.com/ that ultimately deals with the leniency in the canadian government when it comes to handling those accused of violent crimes, and specifically the bail system. it's a super good documentary, but pretty emotionally draining. so i recommend it, but with reservations. it's strange that being from south of that border there is this stereotype that canada is like this crime free haven...which no doubt it's probably better than here, but nowhere is perfect...

@ormo: I remember that as well, when he used to post on hiphopinfinty, it was right after antagonist survival kit came out and it was the same one that he used on that album. he was also selling a spring reverb and some other stuff too. we are two stalker groupies in a pod..I guess he's completely sold off his (almost)entire studio several times throughout the years.

the dope thing is that he has continued to make heat throughout the years, one of the few producers in my opinion to constantly improve and his output as sixtoo was always getting stronger, whereas most others start to stagnate or fall off. not to be a dick, but two of my other instrumental hip-hip heroes, shadow and RJD2, make music that i'm not too fond of these days...

@reignbear - thx for the info on that doc. i'm a pretty big doc fan, so i'll check it out for sure in the next little bit. and i hear you on the stereotypes about canada being crime-free and totally safe. the myths are perpetuated by americans (see michael moore as a prime example) but i don't mind that so much - that's okay. what i mind is how canadians buy into it - like the idea that we are progressive on the environment. we CLEARLY are not, but the myth remains and keeps us from taking action.

on other shit we're pretty easy going. gay lifestyles / marriage, weed, social safety net. but we're BY NO MEANS as progressive as we think we are. it's a subtle arrogance that drives me crazy, and we don't seem to be doing much about it.

sorry to hi-jack the thread!

sixtoo has TOTALLY re-vamped his studio several times over. it would seem that he does an album or two with his gear, then off-loads it all. at one point he was doing all-hardware stuff. last couple of times i saw him he was rocking Ableton with a controller. and i know he's deep into the doepfer synth things....i actually wrote to him asking if he was off-loading a mpc1k, and he had ditched it years earlier cuz there were too many menus to dive into....

This talk is all urban myth generated by white people and is summed up nice in #75 of stuff white people like:

Quote:
#75 Threatening to Move to Canada

February 24, 2008 by clander

Often times, white people get frustrated with the state of their country. They do not like the President, or Congress, or the health care system, or the illegal status of Marijuana. Whenever they are presented with a situation that seems unreasonable to them, their first instinct is to threaten to move to Canada.

For example, if you are watching TV with white people and there is a piece on the news about that they do not agree with, they are likely to declare “ok, that’s it, I’m moving to Canada.”

Though they will never actually move to Canada, the act of declaring that they are willing to undertake the journey is very symbolic in white culture. It shows that their dedication to their lifestyle and beliefs are so strong, that they would consider packing up their entire lives and moving to a country that is only slightly different to the one they live in now.

Within white culture, it is agreed upon that if Canada had better weather it would be a perfect place.

Being aware that this information can be used quite easily to gain the trust of white people. Whenever they say, “I’m moving to Canada,” you must immediately respond with “I have relatives in Canada.”

They will then expect you to tell them about how Canada has a perfect healthcare system, legalized everything, and no crime. Though not true, it will reassure them that they are making the right choice by saying they want to move there.

But be warned, they will reference you in future conversations and possibly call on you to settle disputes about Canadian tax rates. So use this advice only if you plan to do some basic research.

Note: Canadian white people threaten to move to Europe.

Note: Europeans are unable to threaten to move anywhere.

hilarious! i love stuff white people like (if that sentence makes sense).

ironically, the same feelings go down in other provinces, and the response is usually, "that's it, i'm moving to montreal."

and so the circle of life completes itself.

:D
