Yeah, and this is not about skill or tech know-how. Its about plain trial and error experience for the jake-of-all-trades like many of us that master our own music. Learn to recognize what's been mastered good and sounds good when played back on your equipment. Its essential you're getting to know the weaknesses and pros of your monitors for example, assuming you're bound by a budget like most of us and not able to invest a grand just for monitors, cables and EQ mixers. :|

Don't get caught up in gear. A good ear and knowledge can get you much better results than a $5000 compressor in the hands of a noob.


Amen to that. Which could be rephrased as 'learn and master your gear' as well, which is essential for pro results. And for that practice makes perfect.
