What piece should I get for effects while sampling/djing?

Post by TIMP »

I used to have a 303 but I sold it.

I don't really need another box for sampling, as I do it all on my mpc 1000, but I recently bought a new mixer with inputs for effects so I want to put that to good use.

I was thinking about a 202, being that it's one of the cheaper models of the SP, but has a majority of the same effects.

Or is there any quality effects boxes that go for cheap that I could grab off ebay?

unless u can find something old by the big three (yamaha, roland or korg) u wont find too much that fuks w/ roland samplers... other than a korg Kaoss pad... it's still a sampler but the realtime processing is nuts... and most old fx boxes with more than one feature were either stomp or rack units

kaoss pad 2 will go for pretty cheap, u cant really sample anythin with it..

it depends what youre wanting to do.. do you want to like capture samples live while you DJ? or do you want like.. a sampler to play beats etc alongside your mixing?

the kaoss pad 3 has badass live sampling/looping and cool effects for djing

i got my 404 for pretty much that reason, the only thing i wish it did is live looping on-the-fly, which the sp-555 does. i didn't want to spend an extra £200 for one feature though.

in my opinion its the four extra pads and the usb connection that set the 555 apart from the 404. (not to mention phantom power)
that usb makes it possible to sample straight from the computer, and record directly to the computer.
and when your choppin samples the 4 extra pads are priceless.
i almost sold my 555 and planned on eventually downgrading to the 404sx. then i had to slap myself.

sig-worthy haha

i can vouch for the KP series....i love my kp3. superb effects especially the delays, loopers, and granulators. effects you wont find anywhere else.

kp2 is definitely bad ass for just simple effects

a series of guitar pedals might be worth checking out too, a bit more expensive but if you buy dedicated effect boxes, you are going to get some very nice results.... especially guitar reverbs and delays.

yeah, 4 extra pads are kool as hell.
its like that chick in total recall with the extra titty. would you rather have 2 titties or 3 titties.
would you rather have 12 pads or 16 pads.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm looking for effects like delays, phasers, extra filters, but catching loops live would be pretty cool, I'd like to try my hand at that

202 only has 4 effects (delay, two filters, ring mod) so I don't think that option compares with the 303 / 404 / 555 range of sp's (tho the filter on the 202 is the best of the bunch, IMO).

i'd go with the mini KP, or, as suggested, running a series of guitar fx. the advantage of that is you can swap fx in and out and ALWAYS have unique fx (ie: yr fx won't sound like everyone with a mini KP or whatevs). there are old guitar multi-effects that go for REALLY cheap ($50 sometimes) but here are a few things you wanna check for:
--that pre-sets can be edited
--that there are KNOBS to tweak, not just push-button adjustments (this is like setting alarm clocks, no fun at all)
--that when you CHANGE between effects, that there isn't a digital drop out. this was a big prob on old guitar fx.

good luck!

quote!
the sp202 is the "poorest" of this wild bunch, but its filters are the best i heard in the sp world...

Mini KP question:
how is the volume on this machine? i heard is not much "high"...maybe due to the fact it has also the battery alternative...
