Felt like there old music is better than there current music? or felt like you were once better at making beats then you are now?

I was listening to some of my old music today and realised i used to be alot better, I also find i have been struggling alot when making beats, almost a feeling of beat makers block.... i dunno why, i still put as much work in, if not more, but i keep coming up with wackness.....

dont get me wrong i still enjoy the process but it is kinda fruistraiting. :(

I feel like that all the time and I've concluded that its only because your new beats are so fresh in your head, and the old beats are somewhat forgotten...Thus making your old beats somewhat new to your ears if that makes sense? lol

plus alot of your old stuff was done out of a lack of structure, so some times it comes out better cuz it's natural but when u learn structure it becomes harder to capture those moments...

think of it like this

every song is a practice session, you just have a recording of it.

when a guitarist sits down to hone his chops, he isn't recording it most of the time, and if he is, it's to analyze his mistakes

a band may nail a session one time at practice and then struggle to recreate it in sessions to come...but eventually they can nail it every time, then they go to the studio.

not a direct answer...but I think you'll find it helpful, as I have.
try not to sweat it when the beat you make isn't good, I have so much crap on my computer...its god awful stuff but it was good practice

Yeah man great advice.......

Its weird though, all my best beats just seemed to feel so, easy to make.......which is weird because they sound way better than the stuff i make now.....

im also starting colledge and a new job now.....so more things to get in the way of music..

its great you got things going on.
one free hour can be all it takes sometimes...plus you have that added work ethic so you can "relax" but still have your game face on

not a direct quote but i will quote it anyway because it wasn't i who made it up

"the best stuff comes from happy accidents when you are so comfortable and involved in your setup that you forget what you are doing, the music then becomes an extension of yourself and ends up creating itself"

for me it comes from how much time ive been putting in. i go through big time spurts and lulls of creativity and the times where ive been obsessed with beats for the longest periods is when i come up with my best beats. trying to get back into the "mode" not so much.

also inspiration, if you're inspired its gonna turn out dope. when you make so many beats its like a batting average, sometimes you hit a home run, sometimes you hit into the unassisted triple play. no really saying when either is gonna come.

i had that same feeling, and about 3 weeks ago, had a day where i just marched back into the studio and decided i HAD to turn out a full beat as fast as possible. threw the platters on turntable, ripped, cut, chopped, etc. at a pretty frantic pace....

....and ended up with something a little fresher than i'd been making lately. not necessarily better, but a different vibe, and not so "considered from every angle" like everything else i've been producing.

i recommend the speed trick, if only to refresh the process. when you get better at stuff, sometimes you lose that amateur element that can make yr shit inventive.

yeah man, i think i have been over thinking things a little too much and the other day i thought fuck it and knocked out 2 quick beats i was happy with...

End of the day its all about fun for me, gotta love the process.
