How do I get good drum samples onto my 404 if I don't use the computer for my samples? Help a newbie out.

well... you run audio into the rca in jacks on the back of the 404, hit [rec] [ext source] then the pad bank and number, then [rec] again when you want to record, then again when you're done. then play with [mark] till you get a sound you like.

I know that, but I was wondering more like, how to assign a kick drum to one pad, hihat to another, tom to another etc. Is there anyway you can have an actual drum kit sampled onto the 404 without using the computer?

i'm not sure i understand what you're axing. if you mean drum kit as in all the kit sounds heard in a song, then either repeat the above step one time for every sound you want, assigning them to different pads and marking them differently, or record it in once then resample for the others. be aware that the signal degrades when you resample, though. if you mean like a pre-chopped drum kit... you pretty much use a card reader and computer. did that help?

what he means is how to sample something whether it be a snare or a guitar sound, and how to assign it to a pad. I don't remember how to do it on a 404 but on the 606, you just press sample, then select a pad by pushing it, then sample and it should be on the pad you selected. Hope it helps.

seriously can be fun with just that too!
but if you wanted a cf card w/out using anything but the net u could just send files straight to an adapter as root file and import, customize to liking on sp-404...

The files are imported alphabetically from the CF card, starting with the pad you press during the sample import process and working your way up. For example, if you have five samples and start with Pad 1, the samples will be installed on Pads 1, 2, 3 , 4, and 5 in that order If you want your samples on Bank D and start importing them on Pad 9, then it they will go on pads 9, 10, 11 and 12, and then it will switch over to Pad Bank E and put the last sample on Pad 1 of that bank.

So your saying to put files on my CF card and import them that way? You can do that on the 404? And how to you get files onto a CF card? I'd have to get an adapter probably, right?

yes, usb adapter or pcmcia for slot in laptops...adapter for compactflash cards...

, put the samples like this: (c_01, c_02, c_03, etc)... in the root folder, and then put the card into sp and import them

So, you get the kick out of your loop with the mark buttons and fine tune it with the knobs. Go ahead and add some eq or compression at this point to fatten er up. Now, resample that to another pad. Now, remove the start and end point you had on your loop and do it again this time go for the snare... add your fx if any and resample to another pads... keep repeating this until your kit is complete.

I'd like to add a further note on that part. If you are importing via CF card, then the samples must be either .aif or.wav files in 16-bit 44.1kHz PCM format, mono or stereo.

EDIT: By the way, the 404, and some other samplers in the line, can save your samples as .wav or .aif files that you can use with your computer's software.
