the room size shouldn't matter too much. small monitors are meant to be listened to in close range, a few feet away, not to fill up the room. i'm rocking the tascam VL-A4 right now.

$150 for the pair. cheap build but they sound crispy.

Oh, but trust me, a reasonable pair of monitors, which means +10-15Watt will be able to fill up small rooms with ease on medium volume. I really don't have to turn up my monitors much to hear a room reverb going on.

Having said though, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

I have my monitors on top of two Auralex Mopads, which supposedly stops them from transmitting vibrations to the desk; they do improve the sound, but the real problem is that the sound reflects on the walls and corners with pretty nasty results (the sound tends to be more balanced as I put up the volume however, which I can't usually do :( ).

yes, this is shtful...maybe is it necessary you try different positions, i know this is easy to said, but...anyway what's the igh of you room more or less?

It is pretty damn cheap bearing in mind the price at which they are sold at local stores here in Spain (over 400€).
And by the way, the Sennheiser headphones which everyone uses for mixing are the HD650. They are a great option also.

yes, thanx for this. i'm from italy living in france. i think i will not have difficulty to find those. yesterday i met someone wich use only hadphones to mix his professional recordings. no monitors at all...

i don't know if you're totally right, but i think that the dimensions (and the morphology & the materials too) of the room influencing the sound. for examples i have an high of ony 1,80m and i think it is far different froma room of 2,50m high...

you can hear reflections/room reverb even if you have open-style headphones... listen carefully , maybe with just half the headphone over your ear... at least I can sometimes.. my ears arent sensitive or anything so i assume most people can.

they're very "closed"but i think their sound is not flat. and, yes, their really old (but i don't dislike them).

so, at last i build a shitty studio in the cellar. i repeat the dimensions of it: 12m2 + 1,80h...so is it worth a pair of active monitors with a space with those not very big dimensions? wich one?...

After attending a mixing panel with mix pros Ryan West & Bob Brockman I'm way more into the idea of a 3-way system with a dedicated sub. You need to know what's going on in those low lows. If not a 3 way I'd go for something with at least 8" woofers.
Put away the tape measure & just get the best you can within your budget (-;

i tried at a shop the yamaha hs50m and the fostex PM 0.5 MKII....
i listned 3 cd with differnet kind of music (Madvillain, the smiths and swervedriver: hiphop, pop rock, indie rock)...
for the pop rock/indie rock the yamaha and the fostex were similair to my ears where 1)yamaha were more clear to the high/mid 2)the fostex were more "equilibrated" in hi/mi/lo...but when i put the hiphop cd in things were very different: the yamaha, contrary at what i have haerd about them, respounded well to the low/bass level and the "general" level, instead the fostex seemed to give a "confused" sound generally speaking...

the reality for me is however not good, beacause the studio i built in the cellar is hard to phonisolate and is a very small room...to, for example, have the yamaha hs50m works well in that cellar, you have to put them minimum 30cm far from the wall because in their back they have 1 hole where part of the sound came out...for the fostex it will be a little different beacause they got their holes on the face...

i will see what to do...

Thanks for the review, Ellaguru. I think I'm going to give the Yamahas a try after all this holiday nonsense blows over.
