Panning - when tracking out

Am trying to emulate panning effects used by others here -

the lush movement effect I can hear through the headphones does not seem to be present when track out to my old digital recorder - even though I am using the line in (rca outs from 404 to a single stereo 1/8) and recording to two tracks on that device.

Does panning only work on the headphones or does everybody have no problems going out via the line out -

or do you prefer doing panning on your multi track device once you got the sample on it from the 404?

any advice appreciated.

can you say what recorder you're using? seems like a digital multitrack recorder should have some kind of 1/4" or rca ins, unless it's one of those little handheld types. but i used to record to minidisc and my only option was to use an 1/8" stereo line in. it worked better with the headphones output from my source, just a 1/8 to 1/8 cable with a 1/4 adapter on the 404 side.

also, maybe double check that your channels on the recorder are panned left and right.

i assume you're either using the panning effect on the mfx (6, i think) or sampling stereo and pulling the plug on one of the inputs on the 404? i think those are the only two ways to pan anything on the 404 itself. if you want full control of your panning you will have to do it on your recorder after you record it.

spent some hrs last night and it was the recorder - zoom ps04 - I had to configure it to accept the 1/8 stereo line input as "linked" stereo tracks to maintain the SP404 stereo effects - just a 2 second operation actually (!)

without that configuration it was treating them as isolated mono tracks.

so it wasn't even the recorder - it was actually me.

thought i was going crazy -

my soundcard had some automatic eq algorithm switching on when playback - was bringing the quiet bits up - and the stronger bits down.

that was real helpful to me because i was trying to import some samples that i made from splitting a stereo track on the cmputer but then it just put them on the card as mono. maybe if i make one side of a stereo wave empty and import them that will work, im gonna try next time i need to import.. but i also do alot of recorded samples from keyboards etc so im really gonna try out the pulling the jack out thing i never thought of that but now i remeber my friend had this old two track reel to reel and thats how you accessed the second track for recording
