NEW SP404SX!!!!!

this may sound weird and against the grain...

there is an sp-606 for sale a few hours away from me.. ive always thought highly of that machine and even with its flaws some good stuff seems to come out of its users.. so i found the machine on the roland website and was watching a few videos on it.. basically i was watching the functions the 606 has and then thinking why dont they still make these it could easily be the mpc500 (roland version) and with some polishing be the step between a 404 and the mv8800... i was watching mike acosta use the function button to navigate around the machine and im thinking how did that button only now come back onto the sampler? 404 to 606 to death of the 606 back to a 404 that isnt even as good as the 606? why didnt they bring out a bangin 606? or shit even a more bangin 909? it seems like history is repeating its self... the next gear to come out will be a slightly better 606 then the mc808le or something.. or nothing and im drunk

and thats not what i was doing... i was only stating the obvious... and if you had read my post i wasnt asking for a new sampler i was asking if they updated an old box why didnt they update a seemingly better box from the past that has a lot of cool features (4 tracks being one i am interested in).. i have no problems with the new 404 and i am selling mine this week and will either get the 555 or the sx when it comes out... whatever... to each his own

How do you guys think about the SX? It's not what most of us expected or am I wrong? Sure it looks cool and the new features seems to be very useful, I just wonder if an improved sound means a less dope Vinyl Sim?! Imao this machine is for the new cats, if you already got a 404 I doubt the SX will bring sth. special...Well at least I guess there is one cat in Poland who will be amazed by the copy function... lol

It's good business for fans too, as the DJ folks were the ones who asked Roland to make this updated SP from what I can tell. Apparently the SP-404 used to be a instant favorite for live players.

yes its pitch shift and yo ucan make chords with it

it works perfectly on stuff close to a smooth sine wave but it has a varied effect on other stuff

i quite like the 555 chromatic ps. its got such a cool sound i can't get with other gear

and the 1 gig cards are getting more expensive

its essentially a "future proofing" of the 404. by allowing up to 32 gig sd cards they insure by the time 1 gig sd cards are out of production the buyer can just go to best buy and get one cheap instead of hunting one down on the internet

here in europe i can find 1 giga compact flash card for 15/20€, instead the 32gb sd card is about 65/70€ (!!!).
...so, a used sp-404+1 gb cf is not xpensive at all...

Yes, which also should explain why they choose to update the SP-404. The sp-555 hasn't been out that long and obviously Roland very much likes the 404 and dominates this market's segment with it.

Don't forget they could have just dropped all of them and release an entirely new machine, but I'm actually glad they didn't. The 404sx seems like a worth upgrade to me.

I'm think there will be a new MC in the same spirit soon as well. Now isn't quite the time to hugely invest in new gear anyways, so releasing improved version is a smart idea.

Nothing new here. Roland seems very content repackaging their products and doing nothing new.

Oh come on, that's quite unfair, there's more to it than just repackaging. And in fact, they're quite honest about it being quite the same as the SP-404, as they haven't renamed the thing to SP-707. For a product called SP-404SX, we shouldn't even expect an entirely new sampler.

It's eventually going to replace the current 404 and we'll have to live with that, but so far I think it's a good thing.

You have no idea how popular the sp-404 is amongst DJs for live performances. I'm thinking Roland did a good job here investing more time and effort in making this future proof. Especially the SD cards really was a must-do kind of thing.

I actually wouldn't be too surprised if they'd decide to do the same for the SP-555.

seriously though, why no mention of the 808? that's what got it started (i'm pretty sure it came b4 the 202). if you look at these all together; it's obvious why people are pissed. roland could make an affordable mpc killer, but that would really be the mv right?
i will stand by my original opinion that this is better than nothing. and i might even buy it someday. right now though my guess is the new microsampler from korg might just get my $$$ as it brings something new to my set up. i've been needing a new set of keys anyway.
