oh shit!!!

Take a close look at one of the pics...

MFX 21: ... PITCH!!!

Having said that... it's still kinda dissappointing..
still cant play the sample across the pads just by pressing 'pitch' or something..

A few nice things... bit of a let down though...

Multi-track sequencer would've been nice,
No mention of velocity sensitive pads either..

I agree with pretty much all of this. I made a post about this here

so they moved DJFX onto the faceplate and moved PITCH into the MFX...but did they improve the pitch function? that ridiculous video just mentions "PITCH!" and then they don't do any pitching.

also, do we know that it is still a one-track sequencer?

speaking of that ridiculous video, at one point they trigger a robotic human voice and i THINK it says "ELECTRIBE". am i crazy?

As I can see, the main change is with the memory card. SD type instead of CF and the 1GB limit is no more.
Additionally, it looks like there is "helper" software that mimics the banks/pads so you can manage import and export directly on the card in a computer without the current way of putting the raw .wav or aiff on the card then having to wait for the import process in the 404 to convert to it's own format.
Funny, we've already discussed wanting software like that for the 404 in this very forum.

It may be that sampling on the SX no longer uses data compression, but if it still does, the SX software might, just might, also work on a plain 404 CF card. It has to be tried!

Another thought - Roland claim cleaner sampling (true 16bit linear). This may be counter productive as some think the 404 too clean compared to earlier SP's already ;)

I also noticed they put that editor software we have discussed in this new release, which means they are at least listening to our ideas. I like the new 404 despite the fact it's not our dream machine, if roland keeps listening there could be a nice symbiotic relationship between developer and users.

The inclusion of real time overdubbing would be the only reason I would upgrade.
Roland, it isn't that hard.
Do it.

substantially is the same sp-404 with some little upgrade...i mean, if pitch is the same pitch shifter as ever, the Copy function alone is not enough for me...
and no sensitive pads, no ROLL etc...
i think that the whole thing not really justifies a "new" issue...

people need to get over the pitch jazz. ok logic pro has it and that's about as cheap as your gonna get it (if you already have a mac) in any modern gear (software or hardware) your options are get a cdj, get some decent software, get a fantom (m3, motif, etc...), buy some old gear that is severely limited and hard as shit to program and probably will cost and arm and a leg to get repaired, get a sl-1200 and practice or even get some freeware that does a so-so job and integrate (i'm sure there are more options, but whatever). i'm not trying to be an asshole, just saying widen your horizons.

in any case, i'm excited and will buy a 404sx (as dweeby as the name may be) to go with my old 404. now i feel better about dragging my old one around town.
insert funny comment here.

that had me mad excited until i seen the specs. To me its the same thing except it takes newer cards. I had a feeling a real pitch function wasnt gonna be added, i was hoping they would have pattern resample. Unless there is some great reviews on it, Im in no rush to get one.

yes, the pattern resample could have been another really good issue as the zoom st-224 (or the sp-555) show us...

... you dont need anything decent to pitch a sample.. it's not some amazing technology.. it should be there, just like korg has it on it's electribe samplers... I'm guessing roland is just holding it over people to try and get them to buy an MV

damn right!
you have pitch on mpc 500, a very small sampler, on the st-224, small, on the electribes, not that big, and, looking at roland house, you have the sp-505 wich has an unique pitch function...
yes, roland make us wanna buy an MV :)

the 404 pitch is alright , i always map a bank of sounds with pitch and it sounds decent, i like how it doesnt speed up or slow down the sound, usually to do that i put it on tape then find the pitch it to desired bpm and sample in lofi , it will sound dope add some fx and shit resample and it should be alright, the roland js 30 , ms-1 and other older samplers have real speed pitch. mpc asr , electribe, a mc 808 has 16 levels . the best way to add this other pitch feature would be to just adjust the sample rate according to where they land on notes, they could make a lil program to do that i bet internally in the 404, kind of like the 505 auto pitch but with 12 levels.
