Making drones

Post by SLEEPS NUMB »

Lately, ive been digging drone sounds a lot, so ive been experimenting making drones out of samples of found sounds and slowing down 70 psch synth, i was just wondering how you cats go about making drones specifically on the 404, before i was using the 303 pitch fx to slow down sample and applying reverb and delay. Im also thing about maybe grabbing a synth . anything you cats have to add would be appreciated

i like to use subsonic on the 404 to fade in/out a droney sound, then resample to a second pad, then resample a performance of alternating between the two pads so the sound drones on while still sounding smooth (as the first one fades out, the second one fades in). i guess that would be considered a crossfade loop. i used that alot on this track... and what better excuse to repost 8)

i fade in / fade out whatever sounds i'm sampling w/ a volume knob. loooong samples. sometimes from my own keys. i will resample w/ filter / drive and do a sweep thru. i'll then layer these (like kel) by having dif samples end at different times. often i'll put reverb on the resampled sounds.

Thanks for the replies , thats the way ive been experimenting just combining found sounds and slowed down ambiance, lots of reverb and delay.. fauna you mentioned you use the filter and overdrive to make sweeps im going to have to try that, kel thanks for the subsonic trick im gonna give that a try today too. Much respect to the sp fam

One thing i like to do is put a shit-ton of reverb on say, like a horn or string sample. then resample it and cut all of the original sample out and just use the tail of reverb. loop, throw on some fx.

nice category!

I like doing this with sampled shoegazery guitar stuff and steel drums.

Thanks roxy , thats a good idea, im gonna start experimenting with that trick on different types of samples. Andrew P krautrock is what i usually use for droney noises too, good looking friends, anyone else enjoy making drones.. i was checking out the vintage synth forums for ideas for some dope syths for drones, also anyone else think the 303's reverb sounds better then the 404's or did i just eat too many brownies

i think that a good delay, or specifically echo, can lead to some epic droning. especially if you chain them together. I have a vestax faderboard that is perfect for creating awesome drones and pairing it with the stereo memory man w/hazarai pedal is the perfect setup. it's so great because you can just push the faders up and the notes sustain until you fade them back out and it has it's own built in efx too. so just setup some droning chords and mess with the internal delay and then use the stereo memory man for extra delay/echo and loop recording.

this dude gets some good stuff with a microkorg and re-20 space echo pedal

i've also got some good stuff using just the mooger fooger ring mod pedal with it's carrier oscillator ran back into itself and then going through the stereo memory man. I have a recording of this with a simple/sparse drum pattern from the machinedrum and some sk-1 noodling on top. i'll try and post it up tomorrow.
