something kinda neat i found out the other day: Get a copy of Bach's solo pieces for violin (or any other classical piece for solo violin) and try to snatch the long single notes from phrases (a lil concentration!). it takes a while but by the end i had a lots of violin notes that sounded kinda like a vintage analog synth (and not so much like a violin player), and i hadn't even used any effects on them. it depends on where you chop and i noticed when there was slight (!) carry over from overtones of the previous note it added to the "synth"-y effect. and when you have the notes separated like that you can create your own melodies and chords. it's similar to what the mellotron creators had in mind i guess, but using the SP instead of tape loops and keys! maybe i'm stating the obvious, but i thought it was a great thing to do on those days off of work when you don't wanna get outta bed. and it'll be unique to you and not a download.

i feel like thats one of those obvious-but-overlooked type things. i guess when people chop records a lot of people do that without conceputlizing it as a mellotron type thing, but i definitely feel you. I've been buying a lot of just random world music albums, and trying to snag any sustained notes or chords i can find. I think the cool thing about doing this is that not only do you get the instrument, but the ambience and vibe of the albums as well. i got these harp samples the other day that i've been fooling around with.

good call man.

ive been doing something similar on my esx... taking random samples and setting them up in the keyboard samples and then trimming up random areas of the sample and selecting "roll" for the keyboard part.. it makes neat wahwahwah dahdahdah sounds and you can add effects, pitch, adjust loops points and other stuff... kinda neat.. been done before but its new to me.. plus i kinda figured it out on my own then realized what ihad done and heard before..

i thought this was going to be a vinyl sim thread...

anyway yea thats a great technique to have, most of all the "Im on a mission" sampling where you gather several types of the same thing and make the samples your bitch.

youve stumbled on to resampling. its key to loads of electronic music. obviously youve heard of it before cause the sp has a resampling button, but you are heading in the cooler direction of it

i do the same thing with the 555s roll with synth samples and stuff

filter sweeps cut up and down, wah sounds etc

try short delay times sweeping to longer

@ roxy - good stuff mans. i actually have a chromatic bank of melotron samples that i use. i actually think i got the files in the ^^ forum's "library" section, so you should look around. but i've done the same w/ e-piano as well.

but for sure, using strings to get that raw / throaty sound that string-synths and melotrons have: totally cool. you can also get good effect by reversing the samples.

Naw I def knew about resampling before this was more about roll odd parts of a sample and turning that snipit into a vibrating roll.. The keyboard means you can pitch stuff and play that new sound like a weird synth sound.. The jel odd nosdam thing on excelerate tv has a part where jel does it..

Edit: my bad I reread your post and it was more on point than I thought

someone posted an actual mellotron sample pack here a long time ago, with I think 2 octaves or so worth of long notes.

wait maybe it was me? I can't remember.
