recording question

donno if this will make sense. here goes.

is there a way to record (thru external input) while listening to something looping on the 404?

so, for example, i have a drum loop on pad 1, and i wanna record a bass part from my keyboard to pad 2. is there a way to do this so that i don't ALSO get the drum loop onto pad 2?

i wanna be able to hear the drum part to get the phrasing of the bass part right.

may seem ridiculous. lemme know whatcha think.

well, maybe this relates to the 'workflow' post, but how are peeps recording?

are y'all recording into a computer / multitracker then using the 404 for arranging, mangling and live stuff?

that's what i'm doing right now. i was just trying to remove that step of into the pc, back into the 404, y'know?

ill record into my sp-404 if im away from my computer,
but mainly just use the computer, chop things up / stretch them to fit a certain bpm, then transfer them across and use the 404's effects & resampling to mess with it, then build patterns

i'd probably wind up hitting record on my DAW, hitting play on the drum track, then playing bass on the pads, if i understand the ?. you could just resample the whole thing to another pad if you were away from your computer, but that can sound pretty crunchy and kill the finer tonalities. guess that's what this is for...

Have just read the online manual for something called a zoom hd8 -

it's a - basic - drum machine - 8 track with HD cd bruner - as well as a sampler - that would fit very well with my 404 - ins/outs and midi in/out

it has all the step recording functions to get a handle on yr swinging triplets.

can assign yr samples to pads that are velocity sensitive - and save/load them as kits.

it's looking much better value - to me - than the sp555 - as well as possibility for burning a performance straight to cd (?) - five minutes after the performance.
