There are a few options if you're into the button sequencing thing

1) Genoqs octopus/nemo. way more than 8x8... Pretty much holy grail of sequencing if u like working with buttons.

2) midibox Seq - you have to know a bit about electronics, but technically you could make a button matrix as big as you like.

3) modular system sequencing modules.. again, as many as you like can be linked up.

Me, I prefer having knobs-per-step, rather than buttons.

If you collaborate with other people then software is hands down the way to go. It's much more affordable to get a group to throw down $500 each on a DAW than to get everybody to purchase the same sampler/ sequencer. You need some sort of common platform to efficiently exchange work in progress with others.

music is infinite. so why limit yourself?

i was totally all hardware thought computer beats are gay blah blah, than i realized the possibilites with different effects and midi. i mix it all up, hardware and midi. so much more you can do. whats the difference in hitting quantize on a computer or a 404 or making a loop? aka dont hit quantize ever, dont look at the screen twist some knobs hit some pads or keys and hope for the best. its the same thing, it has a sequencer a metronome except more shit to play with to make dope sounds. i dont even touch a mouse except to open it and close it. music is fun no matter how you make it.

people who make beats on computers that are ridiculous
mr. dibiase
benny b
hi res
devonwho
flying lotus
monopoly
culprit
the list can go on and on and on.
tell these guys computers are stupid for making beats haha

its not what you use its how you use it. if you made an alright beat on a 404 it doesnt mean its better than some amazing beat made on a computer, if its good its good. use anything and everything you can get your hands on!

peace

making music=hardware
recording music=software

why?

now matter how many knobs, jog-wheels, numeric keyboards, transport buttons, mute buttons, sliders, pads and keys your midi controller has, it will still be less integrated with the software then a hardware sampler. (if your hardware sampler isnt infected by the "its only possible to do this via countless submenus controlled by cursors and function keys"-illness. This is why i love the SP series, virtually every function is milliseconds away by pressing the button, or using the func key.

this is also the main reason why people love apple, iphone and ipods, its easy, its fast, its stable, and it looks good. This is the reason why i bought a sp-606 ;)

you will probably have more options on a computer, but endless possibilities doesnt equal better music.

recording music is a whole other story, i do prefer to do this on a computer ;)

still i disagree. i know the sp like the back of my hand and a trigger finger is just as simple. whats so complicated about it? you press the pad that makes a sound. it records it on the sequencer. just more sounds to play with at yourfinger tips. if anything computer software has everythingat your finger tips to play with including sounds you might like plus auto chop. endless possibilites to me makes music funner and opens more doors for you to become more creative. again i use everything i own, including software now, and its so fun. but one thing i did hate was setting up the computer bullshit that sucked haha.

anyways all im sayin is its not what you use. and why would endless possibilites not make music better haha? why limit anything. its just an elitest attitude and im glad i got over it cause im having more fun than ever.

you and me both.

except i was the opposite, software first hardware second.

hardware is great for honing in a sound for a few hours comfortably, whereas with a comp is great for quickly getting shit done

and im glad i got rid of all the software, having more fun then ever with my current setup ;)

to me, the computerscreen is a horrible interface for making music, music is all about ears and the hands on experience. its like when you got a television turned on in a room full of people, most of them will probably stare og glance at the screen.

and i have still to mention all the hours spent on setting up and maintainance on a computer. software upgrades anyone?
[ i actually spent one full day at work authorizing Waves Platinum software, not to forget the 12 dvd install of Native Instruments Komplete]

never had a problem with setting up things on a pc.

computer screens can be very necessary to clean up waveforms and those annoying click sounds...cant all be done by ear.
well it could be, but the sp's lack attack and release envelopes

dont you edit waveforms visually on a 606?

nop, sadly i have to use the screen to press start, end and truncate, i do the rest by ear. id love for the 606 to have a snap to zero button for cutting, but you cant have it all in this pricerange anyways.

my two first samplers, the ms-1 and a emu esi-32 didnt have graphic waveform editing either. i got it on the emu e6400, but its a feature that do not improve your music at all.

it doesnt give you skill, but it saying it wouldnt make things sound better is simply not true

im not some kid who learned about music yesterday, and expects a box to do the work for me

sometimes the right tools really do matter in making a song sound good

and do you determine whether is sounds good with your ears or with your eyes? ;)

of course sound quality matter, but for me, its a part of the recording process, not the creative phase of making music.
