With 'get your phase' right, you mean mix your track and sample levels so that it will sound the same both in stereo and mono, right?
I've got a pair of headphones that I can switch to mono. Very useful as it often reveals levels that are too dominant in a mix.

Pretty much. Phase is a fairly complex thing so instead of me explaining it I suggest you read up on it(pretty fun thing to learn about though).

I guess I should say it's complex to explain on a message board. However phase has nothing to do with "your sound and what you like". That is a creative thing, phase is a technical thing. I agree that having a dope track is more important than it being in phase(as long as your phase doesnt cancel out the dopeness).

i usually sample all my drums and bass sounds in mono and samples in stereo if the source from where i'm sampling is stereo
