My friends.

Could you advise me on something...?

I produce on the Sp-404 and Acid 4.0.

What sound card would be more fitting for me (I'm up to spend 150 / 200€).

could you advise me on brands and tell me about compatibility???

If you just want it to record your 404 and get a low latency i'd go for something like a Terratec Phase 26 or a cheap PCI card, if you need mic preamps then a Mackie Onyx Satellite would be the best choice in that price range.

If it's for working with acid 4.0 any card will do, right?

It's just to maximize the soundquality...

nothing in special I should worry about, am I right?

thanks again

That's compact flash card.. he's talking about sound card. . as in . . audio interface for your computer.

go for at least 96khz/24bit quality,

you need at least a pair of line level inputs (some interfaces are made with only pre/instrument level inputs... not what you need for the SP. )

Just stay away from behringer interfaces.

also, you will probably need to buy RCA->1/4" mono adapters, since most audio interfaces have 1/4" mono plugs for each input (they make things that just plug onto the ends of an RCA cable, so it will fit into the 1/4" plug.. this is the cheapest way to do it.)

Sorry I can't recommend you a specific interface/card,

I use a presonus firebox, but I think thats a bit above your price range..

I was looking at the onyx satellite series though, they had lots of good reviews.

more welcome usefull info.

thanks

still I'll make a fool of myself once i start asking questions in the store.heheheheh.

another thing I question myself is: with a souncard pluged to my pc, every sound that'll run through my computer will have better quality, or will I have to choose the sounds that will go through the soundcard???

(I guess this question reflects my atrocious ignorance on this subject.terribly sorry, mates)

and thnks

Can you fit a pci soundcard in your computer? It's isn't always the case that it can be done. You might not have a free pci slot or it's a low hight case that'll only take special size cards - or your pc is a laptop :0

If you can use pci I'd suggest the M-audio Audiophile2496 card as a good but cheap partner to your existing gear. It has ordinary RCA jacks and midi ports and an ASIO driver that Acid should work well with.

If you can't use pci I'd suggest one of the Edirol USB ones.

You should also think about how your going to hook speakers up - what are you using now?

You can either only run ACID with the new card or let everything else like media players use it too. If you only have one set of speakers, you'll probably have to let everything use it. Many home studio owners keep pc speakers running off the computers built-in sound and have separate powered monitor speakers running off a dedicated "proper" soundcard. That way you can edit & mix in high quality but then check how it'll sound over an "average" system when you're done.

thanks a milli, man. Real usefull.

I have a PC, not laptop.

so. i must get a Usb soundcard. That's it.

Right now I only have standard computer speakers.
the next thing is the monitors, after i buy the soundcard.

and that method of which you speak sounds intersting. (producing with high quality speakers and the checking how it sounds on normal speakers).
coolio.

We must be careful with language!
A PC can be a Desktop (fixed) or a Laptop (mobile).
Ok, most Desktops stand on the floor, but they are still Desktop for technical descriptions.
Only the Desktop case can take a PCI card inside.

You can use USB with either kind of PC.

So, you might get USB since you can use it with any kind of PC. You should keep 1 USB socket on the PC reserved only for your USB audio and never use a USB hub in between.

A PCI soundcard has advantages - it stays put, you can't forget to connect it and it's connection to the rest of the computer works faster and more directly than USB.

you will never get proper sound quality without decent monitoring, and and acousticly treated listening environment.

The sound quality gains from using a cheap usb soundcard versus using the stereo minijack input on your PC is virtually nothing. the only advantage of getting a soundcard intended for audio recording is lower latency. Its useful when using the computer to record and provide monitoring when someone is singing or playing an instrument.

24/96 capabilities is nice, but concidering the source, you will probably not notice. And since the target source of your recording at best is 16/44.1, but probably 320 or 192 mp3s, this is not your first priority.

so, in my opinion, if you got 150-200$ to spend, monitors will give you the greatest value.

You could use the same argument for monitors man,
150-200$ monitors will hardly be a good reference.

And the sp 404 doesn't play mp3s does it?
