Finally bought a sp-606

Post by Øyenstikker »

and i love it.

i made the transition from software to hardware two years ago when i sold my midi-controller, software and soundcard. Bought a roland fp-4 electric piano, and took a break from it all.

i started making electronic music in 1997, on a jv-1000 workstation, it was basicly a jv-90 synth and a mc-50 sequencer in one. Since then i have owned different instruments, mc-303, mc-505, ms-1, sp-303, emu esi32, emu 6400, emu esi4000, korg triton, yamaha rmx1, yamaha csx1, before finally turning soft in 2003. I really liked the idea of flexibility and expandability you get on computers, and portability if you have a laptop, but at the same time i hate spending time fixing bugs, updating software insted of making music.

The sp-606 is fantastic, its has heaps of limitations, but i really loved the mc-303 and find it even easier to record live, and sequence parts on it. The pads are superior to the aqward keys found on the mc series groovebox.

Im basicly going to use the sp-606 to add beats and loops to my pianobased music, and possibly even run the piano thru the internal fx.

Original retail price in Norway is 5600NOK, 1€ is approx. 8NOK. It was on sale for 3900NOK and i haggled it down to 3500NOK, brand new, i've seen some used ones sold at the same pricerange ;)

Good to have you onboard man. So you have paid about 440€ for a brand new, mint condition SP-606? Sounds like a good deal indeed.

If you ever wish to sell it, you are likely to still get something between 2800NOK and 3500NOK for it.

Sometimes people do know how to value the SP-606, but sometimes you can get lucky and pay only 250€ for one (less than an SP-404).

i love that a lot of people dont know how to use sp's, so they complain when they sell it to the used stores

thus giving it lower prices

i got my sp 555 for the price of a 404 because the guy who had it used it once before went "this isnt an mpc"

as far as im concerned sp's should be our secret weapon

im going to hide it if i ever play a show again. put a little box around it and when people ask what im using ill go "fruityloops 2" or "cool edit"

something stupid like that

(cool edit is good but would be stupid live dont trip)

Yeah, i noticed it. "I got sp-404, its good for adding some gunshot samples when im deejaying. But u cant do beats sp-404, its just "toy" ....".

I have read these kind of thing a lot...first it got me little mad, but then it started to get funny. Stupid people...MPC,MPC,MPC,MPC...

Yeah, so true. Im not against MPC (i would like to own that little MPC, that portable), or any other hardware or software. But, its just crazy how some people doesnt understand all possibilities with these little boxes, u can be very musical and use improvisation, its not just programming.

^^^ i agree with all, i won both sp/mpc and if u cant do shyt on an sp the latter shouldnt even be an option! if u cant even do a loop on an sp then u need to back away from music slowly...

my two first beats on the sp-606, samples from LPs, kick, snare and hihat came with the 606.

Got Native Instruments Komplete at work, should probably copy the entire soundbank of Battery to get some decent drum sounds in the internal memory of the 606
