Newbie digging... recommendations?

Hi there!

Do any of you have any recommendations for someone just starting out in search of good drums and a few samples??

I think general consensus is that jazz or soul records are the best sources, right?

Anyways, I used to sample from mp3s, movies, youtube and so on, but now I've bought a JB-Systems T2 yesterday and I am a bit clueless about which LP's I should buy.

I mean, I know there's actual digging involved, but I don't quite know where to look at all. :p

j brown "sex machine" (everything from 1965 to 1975 is also ok).
the meters (every "hits" record is ok)
and, naturally, the 45 with the amen break (sorry i don't remeber the nme of that band, check youtube,it's easy to find)

Thanks a lot. Yeah, the Amen Brother is one I definitely am going to buy. Hopefully not too expensive, lol.

( I might go with The Impressions "We're a winner" instead, they have a slower version, made in 1968 before Amen, Brother. )

When I first started digging, I was looking for artists the BeatNuts, Premier, and Pete Rock used but then those became sought out heavily by major league diggers and prices got jacked up, so I searched for my own fountain of life. I would buy LPs for their weird album covers and read what type of instruments were used, then I would catch up on the artists using those instruments and check for them on other LPs. Next I would notice the labels theses artists play for and follow up on that. As time goes by you start to have the knowledge in digging for records that you rather buy.

Like everyone else, I started digging in the Jazz and Soul dept. but I started developing tastes for certain sounds so now I'm into Head-Trippy music of the '60s and '70s. And I feel content when buying an unknown record because I observe the label, the artists, the instruments, and importantly, the era it was released.

I just buy whatever takes my fancy, I tend to seek out names, labels, that I have no idea what they are..

Cool artwork usually sells on me too, although I couldn't bring myself to buy that barbara streisand album with the crazy psychedelic chick on it. . even though it looks so cool . .streisand blergh *sick*

usually I dont even end up sampling off a record, just get high and listen to it, maybe run it through effects while its playing

I recently started digging, too.
What I do is just pick any weird album(mostly jazz or classical though), check the instruments used and give it a listen. I like to get vinyl that don't have too heavy drums.

The one store that's in my neighborhood also sells cheaper 2$ albums, so I'm going to look through those first. I'm sure going by genre will be the first step.

I don't really care so much about which era, but I do know there used to be plenty of bands with psychedelic singers screaming their lungs out. Not quite into that stuff, although the question remains whether it would matter much if I'm after non-vocal sounds on those albums anyways.

Just to picture the overall costs though, a typical Four Tet record costs about 60 bucks.

I think I might got a good deal on some records, a whole bunch of 'em picked by me from a larger list (checked with YouTube if it's anything I like or not).

There's even some in there I probably will listen to just for the music itself too.
