resampling frustrations

i'm having trouble getting my 404 to resample a sound at the same volume as effected original sample. when i press "resample" button the sound becomes distorted and when i adjust the level to a point where it is not distorting the resampled sound is significantly lower than the first and also doesn't sound as good. is this a common problem? the 303 never did this to me, it always resampled exact.

"cheap rhapsody" and "stop the twilight dearly" both are initial forays into the sp 303, warts and all. "fever dream" was made using no samplers but stop/start tape machine/cd players.

you do lose some quality in resampling..

the 303 didn't lose quality because the quality was already very much lo-fi

yes this is a common problem 404. so it's best to record the original sample as loud as you can get it.

yeah i never have this problem, i'm assuming it has something to do with boosting the bass or possibly trying to resample some sort of compression, i used to notice this sometimes with the isolator effect when resampling, but i would just delete and do it again with it turned down a little, but i never catch that anymore, keep on the box and you'll get better at using it to get the sound to be solid

I am going to take a reply i posted in another question and apply it here. This is what I do and what works for me.

"The trick with resampling on the 404 is lowering you sample volumes before you start working on your project. I usually set mine to about 50 for everything I use, and then lower from there. It is a tip I learned when producing with logic, reason, pro tools, etc. But the key to getting loud dope sounds is actually lowering all your samples/tracks, and when you are done with the mixing and eqing and other junk, maximize the hell out of the master volume. Shit is Dope."
