assuming a computer can add a single 16bit value to the string every 1ms (that's very conservative)

it would only take about 6,577 days.

If we include the fact that computing power doubles every year,

it would be alot less. . somewhere between 10 and 15 years I guess.

So if we began back when computers could only *just* do it at 1ms per value, we probably would be almost finished by now :D

If we started doing it today on a cheap supercomputer, or perhaps just a network of 10 average PCs, we might be done by the year 2012, just so we could be sure every song possible had been made before the world ended

it's a dilemma...

most of my favourite hip-hop tracks are built off straight jacked loops. honestly, i used to worship some of these producers, so when i heard the original song i felt pretty disappointed seeing what little actual work they put into it

yes, i think there IS a skill in hearing a grab and knowing it'll sound sick looped with someone rapping on it, but that's a bit different from musicianship or technical know-how.

another point is - if you jack a loop, what's to stop another person using the same piece? if it's just about adding drums and a bassline, chances are they'll lay those down sicker than you...if their version sounds better then that's it, end of story. neither of you can actually claim much credit for it.

when i sample i chop things into one shots. i have no moral dilemma doing so, it's not about stealing someone else's work, for me it's more about not misrepresenting one's own contribution to a track that's yours.

using a bunch of single-hit slices you've got from random points of a track (or even various tracks) is MUCH more interesting and rewarding as a producer than layering drums over a loop. no-one gets sick of 'producing' like that, time and time again? it'd bore the shit out of me pretty quickly.

then again, alot of these issues have sort of influenced me to focus more on synthesis and MIDI production...seems a bit purer and more raw, in terms of materials.

not if you use a sample no one will ever find ! and dont leave any parts open to jack.

i still chop , but sometimes you cant desecrate the classics

and i been making beats for a long time, started with chopping and synthing, then moved on to fat swing and drum matching which i think is just as hard and takes as much skill

So you're feeling guilty about using loops but you wouldn't feel guilty about using lazy ass auto chop?

Yeah, that's right.
Just because it takes longer on the 404 doesn't mean it makes you a better producer. I feel that auto-chopping could be a great help to me. But of course there are some samples that are better when chopped manually.

ableton live has a dope slice to midi feature^^

I'm not gonna mess with MIDI...I just know it's something not for me. You know, maybe I'll like it much more than working with hardware only, but I don't have my own computer, and I most definitely will not spend a dime on software while I'm still in school. So I think I might go with a 606 or possibly even an akai sampler when I have the cash...after I buy me a decent synth, and a working CF card, and some cassettes, an adapter for my 4-track...

if i wanted to use the main loop of a funk song when i sample, then id stop producing and play guitar in a funk band again.

i like producing because its composing and its like alchemy. a little bit of this, a little bit of that mixed with a little sugar on top. i'd much rather mix samples ive made myself either by destroying samples or flipping myself playing keyboard, or just sampling each chord indiviually. no one is going to be sampling the same riff as me if i write it myself.

key part here is I'd RATHER. never take anyone else's word for your own

nothing ever "is" its only how it appears to the observer. so you can go back and forth saying "that is how you do it" but what your really saying is "this is how i do it".

I felt incredibly guilty until I looped something last night and made it sound like nothing like the original, while still being looped

it makes me smile a lot lol

^ soopa - can you up the original loop and your beat? be a good demonstration to illustrate these points
