i feel like rap by nature is harder to have virtuoso people to make it to the top, because the entry level for "pro" stuff is much lower than say a jazz musician or producer who spends every free second working on their craft.

whereas mc's nowadays seem to just throw something together on their lunch break. and if you practice your delivery too much, then you sound fake like lil wayne (ever hear him actually talk? ).

i bet jack karouac would have made a dope mc.

saying that is an insult to rappers. as a producer/beat maker you may think that your craft takes more skill but a lot of effort goes into rapping as well. i could say the same thing for producers. most of the output that of instrumental music is either boring and uninspired or sloppy. how many "producers" take the time to learn about music theory?

i don't get all the jay z hate in this thread. he wouldn't be my favourite rapper of all time but the guy is pretty much a legend and is still to this day dropping relevant and fresh releases.

*edit*

kanye west did the drums for this beat which is kinda ironic.

My friend was playing MF DOOM's latest album and I was very turned off when I heard him using auto tune on a track. I feel like I've been completely inundated with it. The trend seemed to start off around when kanye west redid harder, better, faster, stronger. It was cool that he did it because daft punk made the best use of auto tune i've ever heard to this day, but the recent trend has gone way overboard.

the doom shit was a parody. but yeah a unfunny and annoying parody.

When I first started experimenting with doing mashups, I had a lot of fun mixing jay z's '99 problems' over mf doom's 'coffin nails' beat. They go together pretty well. MF doom and mr. fantastic still do a better job with it though.
