Monitor Recommendations?

So I've been thinking that my next purchase will be a pair of monitors. I've read pretty good things about the Yamaha HS50M's and was wondering if anyone here uses these. Also, if you can recommend something other than these that would be great too. I'm not looking to spend over $450 on a pair, and I realize you get what you pay for, but I can't really justify paying a lot to make my crappy 404 beats sound a little better. Thanks in advance!

I run my 404 into my hi-fi amp (arcam alpha 7) which powers my (dynaudio speakers) sound good enough for my ears . Never understood the need for monitors and the crazy prices they sell for ! that said i hear good reports on the KRK - RP5 G2'S £270.

Monitors aren't for 'sounding good' . .A hifi is alot 'nicer' sounding.. but the point of monitors is to give you a flat reference so that if you mix it to sound good on your monitors, it sounds good on all the variants of hifis and sound setups that other people own.. if your hifi has a particular non-flat frequency response (like 99% do), mixes that sound good on your hifi, wont necessarilly sound good on anybody elses.

So if you're releasing music, or playing at live venues - having mixed on flat response monitors will benefit you.

If you're the only person listening to your music, you'll probably get more enjoyment out of listening and producing on a hifi.

Thanks nyquest for explaining the difference between the two I make music firstly for myself , if i like it enough i'll post it on these forums or on myspace where i guess the sound is not so important. I wish all this technology was around when i was younger . For me it's awesome that i can spend a few hours making a beat/track post it on the net and have somebody on the other side of the world listen to it and comment all on the same day cheers CHUMMSLICK (just a simple man with simple needs age 44 )

I run my beats off some cheap studio headphones that I "borrowed" from my school...other than that I also use a cheap 2.1 system, which is loud enough for my taste. In my opinion you should only buy some good monitor speakers like some KRK speakers when you perform live.

a good idea for monitoring is to , switch between headphones and speakers .

and have your output at lower volumes , to give you more of a listener perspective. you still want fat waves though.

i have krk rokit 5's and they are flat response and as loud as you need yr tunes to be in a small room.

here's another vote for the KRK rokits i have the Gen 2 6's and they get LOUD so i'd say you could easily get by with the 5's like hurling said if you're room isn't too big.

yeah, I usually do half my "mixing" on my shit $30 sony headphones and the rest on my busted ass creatives.

My little setup is in a rather large area with poor acoustics so maybe I should be looking at some 8's. Shit...that means more green.

i have the krk 6's and they fucking knock, unless you space is like 20'x20' or bigger i wouldn't get anything other than the 6's. i have my 6's in a room that's like 13'x13' with double doors that are always open to a big open living room/kitchen area and i sometimes think i should have gotten the 5's, but i got a good deal on the 6's @$150/speaker(then i went ahead and got the $20/speaker warranty). but yeah if you go to guitar center or something and test them out you should get a good idea the 8's are insanely loud.

I'm in the corner of my living room (with very high ceilings) that's connected to the kitchen which also has a wall that's open at the top that leads to my other living room. It's definitely over 20' x ?'.

I was looking at the back of the yamaha HS50M's online and there's a "room control" feature that might help out with my room issues. Do the KRK's have something similar to this?
