peace fam,the 404 will kick your ass!believe me its been kickin mine for awhile now. even thou im a experienced beatmaker (so to speak)this machine is very easy as well as hard!It will test your mind in many ways!
If thi is your 1st machine i say stick with it and try ro master it.Yu dont really need anything else.If you master the 404 you can make beats on anything pretty much!

I'm no expert myself (yet), but I have a feeling that the SP-404, much like the ancient game of Go, takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master. You might want to invest in an inexpensive audio recording device with line-in input--such as a tape deck (Walkman Pro, etc.), Hi-MD or MDLP MiniDisc (MZ-RH10 or MZ-N707, etc.), or low-end flash recorder (Edirol R-09 or Zoom H2, etc.)--to shuttle audio back and forth to the SP. You could sequence a beat, send it to the recorder, then back to the 404 as a sample.

if the funds are low and you got access to a computer you can cop a griffin imic. It actually sounds very good. I got mine for $25 dollars. You can download a ton of free recording programs to go with it.

Get the MC 909 you wont be sorry, I'm only sorry that I sold mine. You will learn sequencing fast and easy on that. Real time recording, step recordind, 16 tracks with 16 time overdub per track, a HUGE lcd screen, tons of effects, hundreds of stock sounds, sampling and chopping is top knotch, 16 key piano board. I've owned MPC's, SP 202, 303, 606, asr-10, but this piece...my friend, is all that. Get one.

I would get a zoom multitrack. If you want something cheap and functional. I actually like the sound alot better than the tascam pieces.
