portable turntables

so i've been rockin my pops old record player for the last two years or so, but the stylus is now pretty shot i'm assuming, and the wiring is getting fucked up, and just the other night i started to get a low frequency buzz that is just not going away, so i figure it's time to invest in a new turntable. Now the one i have had doesn't have a pitch fader which has plagued me for as long as i have used it, i've made due, but i got so many records in mind that i want to slow or speed before i sample that i just need to take care of it this time

so i got a 303 comin this weekend to accompany my 404, and i was thinking about dropping some loot on a portable turntable, this way i can check shit out in dollar shops and sample on the go if it so pleases me, i've always heard about the vestax handytrax and the numark pt01, but this one seemed new to me,

and if i can roll to guitar center and get it for 100 i just might, that is unless anyone on here has somethin bad to say about it......

i'd like to save up for a direct drive table to scratch on, but that is a ways off i'm really only limited to about 130 or so this weekend, but the cheaper the better, so i'm trying to keep it as cheap as possible, any suggestions are welcome, especially if i can go and pick it up at a store locally cause i need to get to choppin, i haven't been able to listen to records since monday night!!! let me know what you guys think

the only thing that would beat out that price, would be a yard sale. i say go for it. i'd ask around first though, theres always that kid who thought scratching was easy and bought two of those. thats how i got my TT1625 for 20 bucks

seriously coming from someone who owns a pair....dont get one...

they are horrible, if i was you id save for a little longer, or buy a portible.....

I got mine really cheap £100 for two..

but yeah they are nasty, sound horrible, shit torque and everything

the pt-01 has served me well. learned about it from this forum actually. great for sampling and listening.

word?? shit is that bad??? i'm not tryin to scratch on it at all, i'm just tryin to play records and pitch em, i'm much more apt for the handytrax though cause i can bring that shit with me to the record spot, i should have enough, i just need something immediately cause i listen to records every day, i can't even listen to em cause of that buzz, let alone sample, shits killin me

I'd stay away from that numark 1600mkII.

Probably your best bet is to either go for the handytrax, the numark pt-01, or save a little longer and get a direct drive.

Technics also made a lot of different consumer level tt's... without pitch, but still probably better than that tt-1600 whatever it is. Might be able to pick one of em up for cheap at a second hand shop... or ebay. Anything trying to rep "DJ-centric" features without being direct drive is a farce.

I got a Numark PT01 and I love it. It's so portable so I can pick it up and move it from my living room to where I listen, to where ever I feel like sampling.

im rocking the vestax handy trax, works great for what im on. will eventu aly have a TT built like a tank as i wanna learn cuts but this is also way off. to many papes!!

Unless you go with a PT-01 purely and only for sampling, I wouldn't go for belt driven turntables at all. I would, if possible, go straight for a direct drive turntable. They tend to be more stable when it comes to playback (less wobble in the sound).

That's what I did, get one of eBay for 50€.

A JB-Systems T2.

Although not the best low-budget turntable out there, is was good for the money and it's direct drive too. Don't expect much of the torque though, it's not huge, but so far it seems to be perfectly possible to scratch with.

Up to now, I only sampled music with it though as I can't scratch (yet).

Portables suck period.
They're only useful if your diggin' at a shop and you want to test out the material on some wax as a "try before you buy" type sh!t. If money is a factor I would get a turntable that allows you to change the stylus, like Technics, Numark, Gemini, etc. A good magnetic cartridge is the ultimate for sampling like the Shure M97xE.
