I've never seen a real MD 4-tracker (uses special disks I hear), but when I was in Highschool I was obsessed with the format. I met a 70 year old man that would use MD decks to do remixes. They really weren't half bad considering the technique.
I think he would us the loop function some of the decks had and record using a L/R double tracking method? He tried to explain it to me, but he used to type like he had tremors in his hands.
yep matter of fact they do use a special "data" minidiscs for the full 4 track recording. you can use regular minidisc on it but you only get to have two tracks. i havent use cassette multitrack but mine uses pretty much the same method as a cassette would with the "track bounce" and all. the best part about it is you can do unlimited bounce (ping-pong according to the manual) and not lose sound quality!
as for sound quality is goes between the analog warmth of a cassette and cds.

Yeah, the MD compression has a "colour" which some of the more hardcore MD users rave about.

I recently bought a Tascam Portastudio 414 MKII, and it's pretty decent.
I just didn't get the power adapter for it, but thank goodness the SP-404 adapter works with it.
