recording 24 bit

i remember seeing some post, although i cant find it now, where people were complaining about not getting 24 bits through usb-audio in ableton live or some other program. i found out that ableton live records in 16 bit as default and all you have to do is just change it to 24.



between this and increasing the internal volume level i can actually get decent sounding recordings through the usb now, finally.

Yeah. I found out the same thing for cubase. I had to change the settings to record in 24bit.

Id like to add though that you won't really hear any difference when recording 24bit vs 16bit

Recording in 24bit can be handy when mixing down tracks so you have some extra headroom in the mix. Im just saying this so people who have been previously recording at 16bit don't suddenly go... "omg omg! I could have recorded my stuff with a 256-fold better quality" ... doesn't wrok that way... unfortunately

maybe we should let them know why you shouldnt all of a sudden just switch to 24 bit8

i just the other day recorded my dj set in 24 bit rather than 16 and call me crazy but i do hear a difference. the only thing is it takes up like double the space for your project

there is definitely is a difference unless your some sort of equalization mastering god. when you track out from your sp there's probably going to be some peaks , but in 24 bit they are less noticeable i think. also if you do have to boost your eq after recording it doesn't sound as noisy. after i export to wav though i try to make it a 192 mp3 and delete the wav file.

Yeah, amen to that. A good 16bit master can indeed sound as good as a 24bit mediocre one, but when it comes to professional beats, you'll be wanting a 24bit quality.

Then again... CDs are still 16bit, so it's not like it matters the world at the moment. Higher definition digital releases of music seems to become more and more popular though.
