Syd Barrett, Miles Davis, Jeff Mangum, Ray Davies, John Lennon, the list goes on and on of great musicians with varying levels of crazy in their life.

im glad i keep it even keeled (most of the time) but i have noticed at my craziest and when im careening between emotions i do make some of my favorite stuff.

Also, after a night full of really intense dreams, next day its like im god on music.

coming from a guy that has natural psychosis, due to my bi polar disorder.. it does help me write a lot and at times I'm so elevated from the plane of reality that I come up with some off the wall kind of stuff.. and I don't mean that in a good sense, even though my doctor is impressed with my writing, but bottom line is craziness does have some ties in with genius due to the fact that craziness does entail some imagination, and imagination is one of the dimensions of being a genius, not claiming to be one. Another bottom line is that you should never want craziness in order to be creative e.g. using psychedelics. Only use psychedelics to expand your mind, and for meditation.. that's the only use that I have found for them. Jimi Hendrix wasn't one of the best guitarists because he dropped acid.. he was one of the best because he had something in his soul that was beyond what drugs could do and the only thing drugs did for him was a realize his place in the universe and his purpose for living, and not for creative ideas... as I believe

2 cents.

great honest response nihilistic.

although i find that people who aren't creative when they trip never have a bad trip because their brain cant make up ridiculous things to scare them.

back when i took guitar lessons my teacher told me when he went to see jimi hendrix he was tripping so hard that it brought down the whole show. it was a total disaster, he couldnt even play the riffs let alone the solos.

and as much as i love jimi hendrix, his career was WAY too short to ever be considered the best, its too bad really. there was only a handful of years when he was on top of his game. psychedelics ruined him.
i think the main problem with psychadelics is that they make you believe things that aren't true, whether they are small insignificant things, or massive delusions (i met one kid who bought acid from my friend, he thought he WAS hunter s tompson.). and now my old friend(cant really be friends with someone who trips all the time) who takes acid all the time just acts like tripping is the word of god.

again i dont think these results would be possible without some sort of creativity inside the person to dream all of this shit up

the caterpillar was speaking in terms of ego:
one side makes you bigger, one side makes you smaller.

Jimi Hendrix, despite his short career, easily can be considered one of the best guitar players that ever lived.

Your comment sounds a lot like people that like to downplay Nirvana's success by claiming the last few shows were disastrous and that it's a 'good' thing Curt doesn't live anymore.

Don't take this the wrong way, I respect your opinion as much as anyone's.

he was the best guitarist for that period of time. but really when you let EVERYONE down like that it has to subtract from your legend. think of all the artists that he could have brought up to fame with him as a producer like all the other guitar legends? what would he be doing today?

I love talking to myself.
Naw, but on the real I'm bipolar too. I just eat healthy and work out to balance my mood, I hated being on meds that shit kills your creativity and liver function.

Yeah, but eventually it wouldn't matter that much anyway. An artist is only as good as his best work.

Just look at Michael Jackson. To me it doesn't look like there's all that much left from the once rightfully crowned King of Pop, wouldn't you agree? It's that short period (or should I say long as it has been quite a few years) of success that defines him (still) as one of the best artists ever.

Another example; I don't think much of Metallica anymore, their last few albums didn't exactly blow me away. But their first few albums justify their status as one of the best/most successful heavy metal bands ever.

Right on man, I couldn't agree more with you.
